Default Selling wildlife to Game parks

There was an article in the Australian papers that the Namibian government are selling wildlife to game parks due to the drought.

The number is around 1000 and they expect to get one million thee hundred thousand American dollars.

Is this correct and how do you Locals feel about this as the number of Elephants seemed to high, twenty eight in fact.

According to that article: Who is selling to whom??

The government is selling to game parks - are the game parks not in Government hands then?

Wildlife trade done legally (correct permits etc) is perfectly acceptable. They’ll be lucky to get one cent for the elephants, apart from the cost of relocation.

Edit - to add to this trade happens between reserves all the time, whether it be via auction or private sale. The Namibians have a desperate situation on their hands. If they are able to sell animals to relieve the effects of the drought, then good luck to them. Their other option is culling. They are getting rid of a few to save a lot, a good management call to make.

Namibia's information minister Stanley Muyunda told The Nambian that the animals will be sold at a public auction and the government is aiming to attract game farmers who have the facilities to maintain them.

If this is the Namibian National Parks having their annual auction then its all above board.Same is done here in SA every year.
These Parks can only take a certain number of each species as we all know.
And in times of drought I guess more are sold off.

The drought is so servere in some parts that if these animals are not relocated in time they will definately die. We've done a lot of relocation operations in recent years, mostly successful, but there were times that permits were issued too late and the animals died before a rescue operation could take place.
At least the Namibian government is acknowledging the problem and acting upon it before it is too late for the animals.
The cost of such an operation is extreme, so selling the animals will help to make the move possible.

]My assumption would be selling to private game reserves. If you read below there is an article attached that may or may not clarify this for you.
The news article in our local papers does not go into detail.
From what the answers below are I would understand the logic behing the sale.

These animals comes from both government and private reserves in “protected” (no hunting) arias.

In these protected arias there are strict non interference laws in place, thus the reason why such a large project had to be approved by the cabinet.
