    Default DIY Trailer Registration thread

So I thought I'd start this and we can see if we get it all down on one thread:

Register a vehicle built up from parts:

To register a vehicle built up from parts, go to your nearest motor vehicle registration authority and submit the following:
    - your identity document (ID)
    - proof of residential address e.g. utility account.
    - an affidavit confirming where the parts came from (form SOA)stating the parts used and the person from whom such parts were acquired. (You must attach the receipts of the purchase or donation of such parts to this form.)
    - request for police clearance (form RPC) after a referral
    - request for police identification (form RPI)
    - a weighbridge (mass measuring) certificate
    - roadworthy certificate
    - temporary license
    - all invoices
    - A duly completed application form (RLV)

Hope somebody can comment here who actually went through the process recently.

Would be interesting to get some firsthand experience. Nobody I know has tried this in the last few years...

Ok, I am going to ask a stupid question.
If I go and buy all the couplers, axles, steel, etc to build a trailer. I weld up and build it. I obviously have all of the invoices, everything is new and assembled.
Where then do I get a chassis number and all of the other stuff? How do I as a layman register a trailer legally?

Iím busy with a landy which has R11k arrears .....normally you just offer to pay whatís outstanding and thatís that.
But in this case, the seller submitted the change if ownership forms (yellow) and now itís a problem.
There are specific forms for this, but you have to give them a name and address where you got the vehicle from. You can claim that you bought it unseen and that it was delivered to you if you can provide receipts to back it up.
I didnít want to give up the dude I got it from and claimed it was a drive-in (you can do that if youíre an Indy ) so there was another set of forms for that and an affidavit.....
Now Iím waiting for them (registering authority) to contact the previous owner, to get permission to transfer ownership.
I have heard of some cases (rural) where you can get the SAP to contact the previous owner, but have yet to try that one

NB. Donít ever try forge a signature on the yellow form..... they scan them and keep it on record.

Legally speaking, you can build 3 trailers a year before you are considered to be a ďmanufacturerĒ and have to register as such.
You can buy a blank VIN plate from most of the suppliers and get a number allocated & punched on at police clearance.
The other option is to pay a friendly trailer manufacturer to number & register it for you.

I asked a very helpful guy at the Cape Town Civic Centre that same question, and his answer pretty much aligned with what jelo posted.

request for police identification (form RPI) will ensure a chassis number

Thanks. That is why I said that I was asking a stupid question. I wasn't sure on how a trailer worked.
