It appears at first glance as if random people are taking a carcass for personal consumption in a national park. My understanding is that one is not allowed to collect food by any means in a conservation area, but this depends on the rules of the specific area.

An example is the Betty's Bay marine reserve. You are allowed to fish but good luck if you get caught with perlemoen in your bag. "No officer ... I promise that I picked them up washed out on the beach." See if that flies.

My argument is that Jelo said that it is only impala and there are many of them. If my understanding is correct that you aren't allowed to harvest food in KNP, then what does it matter what you take? If it's wrong then it is wrong.

If you look closely at the video it seems the rigourmortous (spelling) has already set in. So I doubt it was a recent leopard kill. I would also understand that a roadkill caused by traffic on a man-made road is not natural and can cause a dangerous situation, and should be removed by park officials. I think the point here is the poster might have been a bit malicious and the "official vehicle and staff" were not those intended for the policy.

How do we know it is a leopard kill?

That impala is as stiff as a plank. IF a leopard did kill it, it is long gone.

I agree but the article I read stated that it was a leopard kill which park visitors saw happen. It could well be that a leopard stumbled upon it and decided to investigate? Who knows...

People make stories up from their perceptions and there could be loads of angles on this one. I still don't agree with the way it was handled, even if it was roadkill. They could have avoided this $#i*storm.

I guess the best would have been to ask all the motorists if they knew what happened.

If they stole the carcass from a leopard for a braai, I hope they die of food poisoning.

If they were doing their job for the right reasons, good on them.

100%! I really hope this is true that those are SANParks officials, but its looking mighty odd to me.
There was a situation in Addo the one day - a sick elephant that they had to deal with, one of the officials drove to every vehicle looking on and told us what was going on. Just like that the mystery is solved, and most of the onlookers pushed off to let the officials work.

I think if they appear naturally, you should be able to benefit, but get guarded.... by armed guards. They get walked on and killed. Should be able to make a fire there and then and feast!

If indeed some spectators saw the leopards catch and kill the Impala, why did they not mention it to the rangers/staff when they arrived on the scene? It seems that there were more than one vehicle at the site. (Or were they to busy taking videos)

Is it possible that the Impala was kill by a vehicle and the leopard just investigated the carcass?

Agreed. It happens so often when you arrive at a traffic jam in Kruger, and you get the wrong information about what transpired or what lies ahead of the jam. If the original poster of the "leopard" provided some form of proof that there was in fact a leopard killing that impala, none of this would have been an issue.

For some reason I suspect those original posters made up a story of a leopard to sensationalise what they were posting on social media.

    My imagination runs like this

Look look there is an Impala, a Leopard must have killed it

Look at these guys loading it in a van, they must be taking it to eat it.

That's not right, lets post on social media

    Yeah yeah let's do that.

Guys, SOP by SANParks as published by them is to remove roadkill from the road or edge of the road because it is logical to think that any predators or carrion eaters could be hit by a vehicle.

So even if the guys braaied the bloody Imp, they did a good thing.

    Good grief.
