    Default Welding machine for R998

I need to build a little fence with gate next to my house and need a welding machine. Will I make a mistake with this ?

I live in Sinoville, bordering on Montana. I also have a welder which you can borrow for the job, if you wish.

It depends if you want to weld again?

It should do the job, but for how long?

Thanks Jack that's a nice gesture.

I always borrow my brother's welder. I actually want my own to do stuff here and there.

    I found this thread, https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...32-What-welder

Looks like a 130A welder is borderline useless ?

I bought similar. Looks exactly the same but different brand. It will do the job. For how long I don't know but for that price it is good.

I have a Disston, although its a 180Amp it has completed a number of projects and I am happy with it. For the price and around the home I think its a good buy.
Duty cycle is not great at high amps but for welding tubing and palisades with 2.5 Electrodes you don't really need more than 60 to 70 amps.
    I'd say go for it.
If Force is not the solution, not enough of it was applied....

I own a cheapie inverter welder from Adendorfs. Think I paid R1500 for it a decade ago.

It still works perfectly and much better than an old-school welder. I don't use it often so I won't claim that it is an industrial tool.

But it seems like your needs are similar to mine so I would say that a cheapish inverter welder should be ok.

For a fence and gate you will mostly use 1.6mm to 2mm wall thickness steel and 2.5mm rods.

You will seldom exceed 80A. The welder will be fine.

    Get the auto darkening helmet.

Tip number one : weld onto clean rust/paint/coating/grease free steel.

Prep your welding area with a wire brush or wire wheel on a drill. It is the single best tip for getting good welds.

I have a matweld cheapie welder and it works well.

Got it thanks, I haven't welded something myself in a very loooong time. When i bought the 25x25mm tubing i opted for 2mm walls knowing that I am going to be burning holes.
Tell you what! , when I'm done welding it together I will post some pictures of the weld, should fun

Yes. Eye protection is critical. Those wires fling off at great speed and will blind you!

I once saw a guy that welded a 6 metre gate without using a helmet. He just squinted his eyes.

Not a pretty sight for sore eyes
