    Default Is this possible?

Cops say wi-fi detectors used to steal cellphones, laptops from cars

If laptop switched off then it is 'dead'. Not sure you'll detect a signal. But if lid is closed without switching off?

    Or clutching at straws here?

The Brits have that problem for many years now.
I remember a documentary on DSTV about it. The criminals drive down the street and with their gadget can detect what devices are hooked up to the properties WIFI.
With that in mind it should be very possible. Maybe an IT tiffy could tell us about shut down laptops please?

Surely only if you've set up your laptop to be a WiFi hotspot and if you set the power management to not switch off the WiFi adapter when dormant?

    very possible.

a best practise: turn off device wi-fi when not in use.
Reason: apart from detection for theft as in the OP post, our unethical hackers/phishing-sperts/etc can possibly get access to your device whilst Wi-fi is turned on. just a thought

How accurate can it possibly be. Article states they can detect if device is under seat or in boot of car. Not even Find My Phone, Life 360 etc are that accurate. Unless they using Singles Around Me dating app

Wi-Fi is used for many purposes. On airports they see where the people are so additional resources can be added. Big Brother (Google tracks you), I am pretty sure traffic volumes are monitored. Easy to check how long it takes for a phone to get from one toll gate to an other...

Criminals do not like these new phones. Too easy to track. They prefer old small, long lasting and difficult to track phones. And if they need one in jail they stick it you know where

This tactic requires no technology. Something to be aware of.

You might be able to see if there is a laptop or other device with WiFi nearby, but it's not likely that they would be able to pinpoint where it is, perhaps if they have enough time to walk around cars to block the signal out with other cars and so forth so they start forming an idea of where it is. Not likely though. There are very directional aerials available, but that would become very obvious and suspicious if a guy is walking around the car park pointing an aerial at cars.

Many years ago already in Albert Rd, Salt River/Woodstock, Cape Town, we were warned that they have lookouts posted say 50m before. They had gotten so "good" at it, that these lookouts would then use hand signals to indicate to their buddies further down the road, the type of car, colour and where in the car the items are located. So one day I saw a guy using some signalling and I knew something was about to go down ahead of me. The moment they came running down the road I gave chase, but when I rounded a corner there were about 30 kids and they all instantly started shouting and acting threatening towards me. Not worth a hand bag...

Not only Nokia but there are also some other small size phones. Modern phones would be a bit stretch.

Maybe habitual criminals do some practice

    Albert, only because you asked.

Whatsapp doing its round with photo. A magnet is put on a brake disk. Must be at the Mall's.

Motorist then stops to check wheels and car is raided or hijacked.

A free download is the Advanced IP Scanner. This will show you any devices around you. In a hotel room it will pick up unauthorised cameras and any other devices too.
