Default Ammo box, it is a good option

I started camping and overlanding with bags. I always thought it was a better option as it can take the shape we need to fill in the boot. I remember saying more than a decade ago that boxes were not the best option as you lose space. I was wrong. I share this thread to help future readers why the ammo box is a good option.
I was tired to always have to move up, down and out the bags as you always look for the stuff in the back! I am now using 4 boxes with high lid. I did some cleaning and removed some gadgets we never used. The 4 boxes and labelled and easy to access. It fits correctly in the boot. I only add 3 clothes bags as we sometime stop in lodges and it is easier to move with only these bags.
I did not want a drawer kit as it is quite heavy. I tried other type of boxes, but it was either to big and heavy or too flimsy.

The only problem with ammo boxe are the latches. It brakes all the time!

The one more thing with these boxes is that you can found inside bags or outside covers made for it. You can really create the boxing solution meeting your requirements.

Another positive to add to your story is that they stack very well without sliding off each other. Very handy for us blokes without drawer systems.

Get decent ammo boxes. I have the Frontrunner kind and the latches are strong today as they were when we bought them.

My "New Years Resolution" is to find a way of fitting hinges and a latch to these boxes. As Swartkat has mentioned, they really are the only solution and the effort may be worthwhile. If you hear nothing from me, it will be because of the mud on my face.
BTW the Frontrunner ones may be good quality, but SWAMBO really struggles with the stiff clips.

If you are serious, help me find some surgical tubing and we can make some up. I have some "hinges" that are made from this tubing and plastic dowels and work like a treat. I have always said I would make some but am struggling with the surgical tubing.

I assume you guys are referring to "Wolff boxes".

Ammo boxes are those smaller brown army stuff - real ammo boxes.

Hinges would be a significant (if perhaps the only improvement) that could still be done to these boxes!

Love them to bits. I own 10 in total and cannot imagine my life without them.

There are ammo boxes, and then there are Wolf packs, the latter which are the one that breaks the latches. But in 19 years I that I have owned mine, I have never broken even one.

Default Ammo Boxes - How to Close Clips on Lid

Sure you are closing them right?

Had to show someone how to close the lid clips on an ammo box the other day.
Here are some pics, in case anyone else is not sure.

The clip has ridges halfway down showing exactly where to press with the thumb.
Much easier, less chance of breakage, especially when box is new.

You are right Johan, us "ou manne" have carried enough ammo boxes on our shoulders to know what a real one looks like - but in general, and in recent times, the Wolff boxes is also known as ammo boxes.

I haven't got the faintest idea how I will eventually approach this - so you design might well be the perfect solution.
    Care to share?
I was thinking along the line of finding one of the many standard hinges available, and plan around that.

The standard lid and the raised lid present different challenges, that I know.

Been using that technique as well, but still SWAMBO find some of them difficult to open - some makes harder than others.

Petri, the spring wire ones may work, but I have found that they tend to fall out from their slots.

Yes, they may be the best spring clip solution. But it would still be very handy to have those lids on a hinge - and then the latching becomes easy with many options available, including your spring clip.
