Post Weekend Getaway ideas - rustic cottages

    Hey everyone
I am planning a short 3-4 day getaway for 2 and am craving the open vlaktes of the Karoo and inland in general. Can anyone suggest any rustic little isolated 'shepherd's cottages' somewhere up to about 6/7 hours drive from Grahamstown?
Doesn't need much more than a good view and a hot shower (even that can be done without if the view is amazing!)

We used to always stay in places similar to this in the Swartberg and Cederberg. Think big inside cooking fireplace and thick stone walls!

I've only got a little polo at the moment but it does well on some not too challenging dirt roads - it thinks it's a 4x4!😂

    Many thanks!
    Dani

Makkedaat caves in the Baviaans. There is a cave called Dassiebak.. Reachable by car. Amazing view of the valley when you sit on the small deck for two. Inside fireplace..and very thick stone walls on one side and wooden walls on the other. Gas shower but no electricity. You will have to enter from Willowmore side.

Why not something on the Western edge of Baviaanskloof or something like this?

Kouga Kliphuis is amazing, but personally I would not go back in winter as there is very limited sun. As for the fire place inside and stone walls, this is what you will be getting, but a bit dark in winter due to being so close to the mountain on the opposite. Was there in summer again, and way better as you can swim, wind was a factor though.

The route over the mountain is one of my favorite ones, done it in both ways and each has its own uniqueness to it. Only my personal opinion.

Enjoy which ever way you will be doing it, you co-pilot will be opening and closing quite a few farm gates

It seems like us Eastern Capers only go to Baviaanskloof....speaking of which, Bo-Kloof and Doringkloof are other nice places on the Western side of Baviaans

What about places between and around Steytlerville and Graaff-Reinet? I haven't been that way myself but there must be some nice places

...….am craving the open vlaktes of the Karoo and inland in general.....

    Go to Mountain Zebra Park.
Then you will see Karoo Vlakters and more.
Stay in one of the two Mountain cottages ...rustic

Search for bucklands. 118km away from Uitenhage and reachable by car. Karoo uit en uit.

If you go in winter take lots of wood.

I see they have a fence around the cottage, all the lions in the park now.

They never use to and it was a problem if you opened the front door in the morning and the buffalos decided to visit.

The fence is to keep this lot out.
This is 100m from the cabin gate.
