    Post Toyota KZTE 3.0

My Mother drives a Toyota HiRider KZTE 3.0

She has now done 500000+km and still going strong. No oil leaks engine good enough for another half a million and she pulls a 1 ton trailer weekly and gravel road daily.

She has been complaining that there has been a power decrease from when she bought it on 80 000km. I think this is normal considering the km and the drop in power has been gradual I believe.

Does anyone know or have experience on how to increase the power just slightly without the potential of doing damage?

    Any advise will be appreciated.

I think a full check of injectors, pump, valve clearance and turbo is well due at that mileage.

    Just some small queries.
    some maintenance info.
    some mods info
I think those engines are good but half a million kms will cause engine and drive train wear.

    Some questions.
How often does it do long uphills? That engine needs a good burn/cleanout from time to time.
That bottom end is extremely hard. So if it has all it's regular services, it will be fine.
A dose of 2 stroke on every 2nd tank will also clean up the inpellers on the turbo.
Also change that thermostat. It is old.
Also top up that viscous with a tube of silicone oil. (From Toyota)

Without a full strip-down you cannot know if this is general wear & tear or evidence of a bigger problem.

You don't mention oil consumption and coolant loss.

    Has the fuel consumption increased?

    When last was it serviced?

Whatever you do, just ensure you take it to someone with a "feeling" for older cars. Nothing worse for a car of this mileage to be taken to someone who looks at it with a view of "Ag it's OK, just another worthless old piece of @#% which the owner thinks is still worth something!" No quicker way of killing your still very usable, but down on power vehicle.

    I have a 97 Hilux 2.8D normally aspirated.
It is on 422 000km. No oil usage even under load, if I don't push too hard.
But my power is not what it used to be 200 000km ago. Sure injectors and fuel pump needs to checked, will be done next timing belt change....50 000km to go

You adjust to the circumstances....towed a full trailer & bakkie to Hogsback (650km trip) two weeks ago with no issues. Slow going on the hills, even 2nd gear @3500rpm, but no oil usage.

...also no oil usage does not equate to no power loss

    ^^

    This!

Don't let some laptop mechanic get near it, find the right place where they know how to deal with older vehicles.

No Oil consumption but I think some coolant loss.

Last service was about two months ago.

I don't believe there is any problem with engine. It's just old.

coolant loss on the KZ-TE should be watched like a hawk

but I think you are correct: it's old

If the engine is low on power and not smoking too much under full load , things like boost pressure on the turbo should be considered.

If I remember correctly the healthy boost pressure on the KZTE was about 85 kPa or 0.85 bar under load. If the engine sees the boost it will add the fuel for the power....no boost, no fuel, no power..

On these older generation Tdi's the exhaust turbine's waste gate valve had a tendency to become leaky over time
