So does it work like this: tripod mounted, long open shutter, with a slight drop of camera middle point before shutter drops and snap?
Gif yes that is the general idea, I hold the camera to try and get a smooth motion. You need to play with the shutterspeed but about a second is usually the ball park, the nice thing with digital is you can see the results and see when the highlights blow. The rate of movement is important as you can't be too fast, then everything is a blur and too slow it looks like terrible camera shake.

It's fun to do and also a tool to practice composition as you need to "see" the final pic before the shutter is tripped. Time behind the camera helps immensely and has helped me being able to baffle togs I shoot with on the beach by drawing a composition in the sand, with the camera still in it's bag. And then shooting it when the light is perfect.

Clever use of the trees to kill some of the dramatic light. Lovely!

Just a suggestion. Can you state the settings and equipment thatyou used for the pic? Also if you use any correction programs for the finalpic?

I have no idea how this works on the cameras, does it take multiple frames or is it just one pic Ettienne?

Riaan it is on the Camera and what it does is it takes Three frames at different exposures and then merges them, the result is stunning and have always wondered how it is actually done .

So it takes three frames and doesn't manipulate one frame and pull highlights and shadows. In the days before in camera stuff the "bracket" function was used, where camera takes three frames at different ( up to two stops) exposures - but it had to be merged in a PC editing programme.

I would hazard a guess that in camera processing won't match a dedicated HDR programme where one can set the parameters better. Can't say I'm fond of the automated HDR look.

Pitty about the haloes! Other than that they look quite nice.

thank you peter i am sure if you were to use lightroom or an editing program you could get rid of the haloes . I don't do any editing on my photos and are mostly S.O.O.C

Graduated neutral density filters will come in handy for you then.
