    Default Age requirement for Rooiputs

Is there a minimum age requirement for kids for camping at Rooiputs? I'm aware of, and prepared for the risks - we've been there numerous times, once with a leopard watching us make dinner. I'm just wondering whether DWNP will deny our reservation with a 2 year old and 6 year old.

We have a few photos like that and one with a leopard watching us braai as the sun sets. We'll take extra precautions for the kids.

The biggest problem we encountered with kids at Rooiputs was how young they were and driving 4 x 4s... They could hardly see over the steering wheel.

I did consider take my kids to Rooiputs and some of the camps in Moremi/Savuti when they where between 6 and 10. I decided against it at the time as there was no way that I could keep them from running up and down at that stage. I think it will be easier when are between 2 and 4. Now they are teenagers so we have been to Rooiputs and Moremi/Savuti, but one constantly need to remind them about the danger.

I fully agree. Takes less than a split second for one of the predators to snatch a child. You cant watch your kids 100% of the time when camping.

Personally I wouldnt take kids under 13.

I agree. Never been to Rooiputs but I recently took my girls (3 years old) to the rehabilitation center just outside Thabazimbi. You get to walk between the enclosures where leopard's, lion's etc are kept.

The response these animals had to the little ones are amazing. There eyes were fixed on them and a few of them even crouched down with their tails whipping about (hunting mode), and we even had a cheetah charging towards my daughter. Luckily I kept them at least 3 meters away from the fence. I didn't even see the cheetah coming. Split seconds.

    I wouldn't risk it.

I hope that Musashi, his wife and his two small children are unusually well disciplined. I too have seen how programmed the big cats are towards the predation of children. They switch immediately into hunting mode at the sight or sound of human children. Their instinct is to hunt the weak and vulnerable.

At night in these unfenced campsites, where you circle of vision barely extends beyond 10 meters, a lion could be upon you in split seconds without you even having a clue of their presence. More and brighter lights only serve to completely obliterate your night vision.

The children will have to be washed, changed into their nightclothes and in the tent before dusk each night with the parents well prepared with ways of entertaining them during this confinement. During the day they will have to be kept within arms-length and the parents will have to be constantly scanning their surrounds for danger. Even a scorpion sting can be fatal in a two year old. Personally I think a holiday at the sea would be more enjoyable until the youngest is about 5 years old and is able to understand logic properly, otherwise it is going to be one long fight.

We took our son the central Kalahari/moremi/chobe when he was 3. We were with two cars and would not have wanted to do it with less. We would use the cars as barriers on one side and a fire on the other side. During the day he would usually play on the bed in the camper.
We did have child leash. How cruel it may sound it did provide some extra control.
I would not attempt it without some more friend in your group. Deffently with 2 kids to keep in check.

I go to these camps, Rooiputs/Polentswa because I want quiet and peace which I cannot seem to get at Mata Mata and Nossob.
Please keep this in mind with other people who may be there for the same reason. It is hard to keep children 'quiet' and not quite fair on them?
