    Default Elections in Malawi today

Presidential, political and council elections are taking place today in Malawi. Shops and offices should be open but maybe not with full compliment of staff. There should not be any disruption to travellers but border posts could be slow due to low staffing as people go and vote.

    Cheers

The results are expected today at 13.00.

It's neck and neck at the moment. If you are traveling stay in your resort/accomodation today, don't plan to move around.

Especially if you are in LL and BT.

The presidential helicopter was flying over Blantyre around 8 this morning .

There are some anti government protests in the main cities today, following close elections results in May.

Avoid Lilongwe , Blantyre and Mzuzu today if at all possible.

    Cheers

Some more demonstrations today and some scheduled for tomorrow. My advice is to avoid the cities and stay at your campsite /resort.

Some businesses and government offices were attacked today in Mzuzu, photos attached.

If in need of more specific advice feel free to PM me.

    Cheers

    Lilongwe is quite volatile today.

If you are in the country at the moment follow the advice from the people at your lodge/campsite regarding the time and venue of these demonstrations, especially if you are in Lilongwe or Mzuzu.

    Hmm, according to this

They are a democracy. Wonder why they are unhappy with the elected government? Perhaps taking lessons from our chaps?

There are widespread claims that electoral commission made serious 'mistakes' in the counting of the votes. One of the demonstrators' requests is for the chair of the commission to step down.

There are countrywide demonstrations planned from the 26th (tomorrow) to the 30th of August.

The demonstrators planned to close the airports and land borders. In response the government has now gazetted these locations as being no go areas , like State House etc, hence they will be protected by army and police if the protesters attempt to get near them.

Check the latest with your lodge/hotel/campsite/airline/tour operators.

    Cheers
