    Default Family tent

    Hi guys.

I hope someone can give me a recommendation.

I currently have a howling moon 3x3m dome tent with a front extension.
    It is an awesome tent.

But now to small for our family of 4.
Two stretchers and two blow up mattresses.

Does anyone use a tent that they would recommend?

    Thanks a million.

We got 2 3x3 canvas tents, old Greensport tents with sort of an extension in between the 2. Extension adds another 3x3 area. It's huge when it's setup, but gives loads of space.

Check out the Coleman range of tents, our kids use the Coleman Chalet that has two sleeping quarters with a vestibule connecting them - one big tent with three rooms if you want. It folds small enough to fit in a carry bag, with its flysheet and poles and pegs. It takes them about ten to fifteen minutes to set it up. They also pitch a gazebo in front of it to extend the vestibule.Name: IMG_3708.jpg

Pity Cadac stopped making tents. I have the 6 sleeper. Have no idea what is equivalent, just my opinion but I would personally stay away from camp master.

We're a family of 4 too, and our 3x3 Tentco is perfect. The kids have Disc-o-beds that stack though, so there's a little space saving there.

Hi Johan. Tell me more about the Nevada? How long does it take to setup?
What is the size of the tent.

I am a fan of howling moon.

    We do since 2012.

Space is lovely, quality is good, pitch time at least 20 minutes. To get in back bag, 45 minutes.

But we do have coffee with that.

I have one and it's fantastic. Once set up, you will struggle to find a more spacious and comfortable place to camp.

BUT, it's big and it takes a while to setup. If you're staying more than 2 nights on a spot and you have a big family, it's fantastic; spacious and well made. I think you can comfortably sleep 4 people on single stretchers. More if using blow up mattresses. If you want to move every day, I don't think it's ideal.

Weight is about 60 - 70 kilos. And size is not ideal - the bag for the tent itself is probably about 1m x 50cm x 40cm. But the bag for the tent poles is quite long - maybe 1.8m so not easy to pack in a SUV.

Time to setup; about 30 minutes if you're practiced. Maybe a bit less if 2 or more people work together well - but not much less. You start with setting up the frame, then basically hang the tent from that. Then pull the cover sheet over all that. Then lengthen the poles where necessary. Then all the pegs and ropes. It will help if you're tall..

As an aside, I don't how available these tents are anymore. There have been some comments about HM and their support..

Interesting, we only recently got rid of our Camp Master Lagoona Diner after 17 years of faithful service, taking myself, my wife and our two kids on countless trips. About the last year or so we had to take an extra tarpaulin with to put over the main sleeping area if it looked like rain, as it started leaking all over. Before that never got wet and never lost a tie down or hook due to ripping. I suppose it depends on how you look after it. Was only ever pitched and broken up by myself and my wife. Always folded it exactly like it came out of the packaging the first time and we could set it up in less than 10 minutes.

When it was time to say goodbye, we were on our way back from Robertson side to Cape Town. We stopped at the stop and go outside Robertson and there was a guy selling feather dusters. I asked him if I can swap him a tent for a duster, the guy couldn't believe his eyes when I actually gave him a tent for a feather duster. We did end up giving him R30 and all the change in the ashtray though, so he didn't loose out to much.

We are also currently shopping for a new tent, so this is a good thread to see.

The Sierra and Nevada are similar in size and about identical in amenities.

Yes, if I recall correctly the Sierra is a bit longer?

Howling Moon went down with Jurgens.

Many tent models not available any more - including the Sierra.

Yes, I would be careful buying a HM at the moment, you might struggle to get support if something went wrong.

Back to the topic, also take a look at the Coleman Instant 8, I looked at them a while back and it looks like a very nice tent. Quick to setup and a lot lighter than the canvas HMs. I think you can get them on Takealot?

Agree HM was jurgen's tent division and went the same way as the caravans. I have had a lot of repairs for the new trailer tops, quality and build not to HM specs from before.

Look at the tentco range and see what you can do to adapt to your requirements, quality and workmanship is good and price is great. It might just be an option to go meet Sneaky Pete
