    Default How do I fix this LED Stop Light Array

    This High Mount Brake Light started to flicker early this week. Since this morning it is dead. There is still 12V on the plug when pressing the brake pedal.

    There are only 4 components on the pc board. 6 LEDs on the other side. What can go wrong?

    If you have a very fine soldering iron, try to re-do the joits.

    It might just be a dry joint.

    I checked the joints under a magnifying glass. Cannot see any thing suspect.

    I will give it a go. It may just be the problem.

    Did you check voltage on the PCB? If you give it 12vdc now from croc clips, does anything happen?

    It is the High Mount brake light in the rear window. Legally no problem if it doesn't work.

    I prefer it to be functional.

    Could not find one online yet. 2003 RAV4.

    I connected it to a battery.

    This is what I measure. See picture.

    Battery = 12.8V

    Between segment 1 and 4 : 12.5V The Red and Black dots is where it is connected to the PCB
    Between segment 1 and 3 : 11.1V
    Between segment 1 and 2 : 0V
    Between segment 2 and 3 : 0V
    Between segment 2 and 4 : 0V
    Between segment 3 and 4 : 0V

    Go to stealers, get the part number and then search on that number. Send me the number and I'll see if I can get one in the UK for you. Probably be a lot cheaper than in SA

    @NewLandy

    I looked up the VIN/Chassis at www.toyodiy.com. It shows RAV4 model ACA21W-AWPNH. The brake light on their parts list is not even close to what I have.

    Searching Toyota Mid Brake lights, I saw something that uses the same PCB.... but the plastic assembly is different. See Part no 81570-AC030 at Amazon +- US$85. Add shipping and 30% customs duty on vehicle parts.

    Based on these values and the circuit diagram, I’d check the first two LEDs to see if they are open circuit.

    As the LEDS work as 2 in // and then 3 pairs in series it does seem like a break in one of the 2 pairs and that the last pair is fine due to the 11.1V reading which indicates they are conducting otherwise you would have also got 0V. The 11.1V also shows the 2 resistors are fine as well as the diode next to them.
    You could perhaps de solder each pair of LEDS and test in the diode scale if they conduct and solder back if fine. Observe the polarity when desoldering.

    The ones I bought (post above) did not work.

    I needed Super Bright LEDs. The only way was a LED tail light for a truck/trailer. Took a few off and replaced the blown ones on my setup. (I needed some help with this )

    Everything is working again.
