Default 2016 VW Polo Hatch - Boot not opening

Of late my wife's polo boot does not open every now and then and becoming seriously problematic more frequently.

Whenever it decides to remain unlock you can lift the boot release lever at the back but nothing happens. It feels as if it does not lift as high up as it should and the familiar feel and sound of the boot releasing is absent.

A hectic amount of pushing on the boot, the bottom metal part , has let it open in the past, but otherwise you have to access the boot from the rear seat release and hope that it opens the next time.

I presume that this is going to be a dealer vaseline episode, but it there perhaps any chance of a diy fix or anybody that has knowledge of this?

Is it an electronic or mechanical release?

The latch release mechanism tends to fail on these VWs. Should be around R1800 for a new one, and is easy to replace. There are some videos in youtube. You can perhaps try Goldwagen as well.

    not under warranty anymore?

You'd have to remove the boot trim on the inside.
Lot's of times the actuator gives in and needs to be replaced. Sometimes you lucky and its just the connection that becomes iffy.

Can you hear the actuator activating when pulling the handle or not?

Replaced the lock on my cousins polo. Think it was below R1k, but canít exactly remember.

Easy to do. Thereís a little spring loaded worm gear inside that releases and then rewinds. On the one Iíve replaced the worm gear stripped... no easy fixing that.

When it does not want to open, you hear nothing. When it does, you can hear it "releasing" (which I guess then is the actuator?) clearly.

    Lubricate with graphite.

My Kombi did this, it is infuriating! A bit of graphite mixed into vaseline to make a grease, rubbed onto the latch mechanism, and worked in by operating the latch a few times cured it.

Normally they have some kind of mechanical fallback. BMW, Renault all have it. So maybe just find that trick latch. Then you can see if it is permanent or if it is just lubrication. Some Coppaslip will help then.

Just to be clear, it is this one, not the swivel vw badge type one.

I'm also leaning towards something that needs to be adjusted, lubricated or loose, rather than something broken. Otherwise why would it work sometimes and sometimes not.

I have 2006 polo that did something similar. After opening, a cable tie sorted out it. Still working about 2-3 years after that fix. Lock wasn't properly secured.

Iíd suggest you just open up the locking mechanism and have a look. Other reports Iíve seen on VW forums have described similar situation as per WillemT.

It should be straight forward to ID the problem once you have a look.

My mom's Polo has the same problem. My Amarok is also fond of eating door locks. :/

Opened the boot up and not much wiser. There is barely dust in there such good clean condition is everything.

The mechanical parts (albeit very flimsy in my opinion) is working 100%.

So the issue must be with the electronic sensor side that ignitiates the actuator? How can it work sometimes but sometimes not? Does this necessarily mean to replace the part or is there something else wrong, contact somewhere etc? I cannot see or feel anything loose and I did give it some silicone spray everywhere.

Check the cable harness that comes from the body and runs to the lock and the top brake light. Open it up at the place where it flexes the most every time you open/close the hatch and look for broken or cracked wires. Found this caused the problem on Swambo's Jetta.

So the joys of a German badge in the garage...

Parts department says you can only buy it as a complete unit. R1,400. Service department that quoted R2,500 to replace it, says now that we can take a chance and just replace the micro switch as they also recon the problem lies there and not with the actuator/motor side.

Still going to be a exercise that is going to make the teeth pain.

Goldwagen does not stock it, OEM only.

I just changed the rear lock mechanism on my Audi A5 Sportback.
