Default Is a grass seed net needed for Chobe in June/July

    Hi,

I am aware these are needed in the Kgalagadi but I have not been to Chobe before. We will be driving from Kasane to Maun. All the extras and gadgets are adding up so I don't want to buy if not needed. Would one need one of these nets for this route in June/July 2019?

    New shape standard Fortuner

    Thanks

We went in opposite direction 2 weeks ago. Net was not needed on any of the popular roads. In some cases however, when we strayed to not very popular places (we drove from Savuti to Nogatse area via road that looked rather unused recently) the grass was really high and net proved to be useful.

Most of the Chobe tracks will have been well mowed by other vehicles by then, but I would still fit one - just one or two passes through an area with high grass is enough to deposit a significant amount of grass in front of your radiator (and it is also crucial to check under your vehicle for grass build-up around the exhaust pipe, which can ignite and burn out your vehicle).
Grass seed nets are cheap, or make your own out of some shade cloth (get a loose weave, not too solid) and attach it with cable ties. Remember to roll it up when not needed so you don't impede air flow. The whole thing, including the cable ties you cut off regularly to roll it up, shouldn't cost more than R100 or so.

As Tony said, pretty cheap and useful to have even if you end up not needing it.

The only place I would have wanted a seed net in Chobe in July was on the marsh road to Savuti, but then it was just a short stretch for the first couple of kilometers where it splits from the sandy ridge road.

Going back though, personally I would not bother putting one up.
