    Default Broken bushwing arm

Has any one experienced a bushwing arm on a Bush Lapa breaking in a windstorm? See attached photos.
The next arm also has a hairline crack on the weld!

Fairly mild storm at Cape Vidal where the camp sites are quite protected! Have spoken to Bush Lapa directly.

That looks like a pretty good straight "break" to me my last altercation with a grinder and aluminium had the same result

Why would they join square tubing? Cost cutting? Unbelievable for such an upmarket product!

Earlier model may have had different design. The other tube does not look like it has a join.

Badly made joint between 2 pieces of square tube. Agree, would not expect such cost cutting and shoddy work on what is supposed to be a prime product.

Why jump to conclusions here? Who knows why this happened? Why it was joined? Did the OP buy this BL new or secondhand? Was it maybe repaired for some or other reason? I love the way people judge before having all the details.......If I am wrong and this came from the factory like this then I apologise.

That looks like a butt weld, ground down, without chamfering the ends first.

(if so, I think the cost of the joint is more than the cost of a new length of tubing).

I had the back arm break where it is welded to the hinge section. When I refer to the back arm, it is the single arm that runs above the Miskruier door when the wing is open. Namibia's roads is not always your friend... Took the Miskruier in to BushLapa (Andre at the time) who had it re-welded.

It looks as if that is a fused join. It has been welded. The discoloration in the galvanising or cold galv process does show. It has been slightly ground down. How old is the arm? I would say that with that join, it has lasted for a very long time. If metal stays stable for a long period of time where it was joined, it should last a very long time. With our lifestyle and it being towed and twisting, expect failure to take place. It is part of life.

Road should not break any arm when it is in the stowed position.

Looking at the number of the van, no 94, it was made in early 2013. Ours is 87 and the last or second last that was completed in 2012.

So the wing on no 94 of the first 10 wings made probably and the design have since changed multiple times. We did not take a wing when we bought because it was still sort of in prototype stage. We upgraded to.a wing 2 years ago and ours have no welds on the arms and have stood up to massive winds.

Jip Christa, early days in wing design that has been in 6+ years of use on this van. Still not something that should happen. I look forward to feedback from the OP on interaction with BL.

I've heard of a few where the 1st one above the door was bent and then broke when trying to bend it back. Aluminium does not like that.... Those are however due to operating error when opening the wing before popping the roof. The nut on the gas shock then hooks the arm and forces it upwards as the roof opens. Been there when I had the 1st prototype of the wing on B8. I fortunately noticed in time before any damage occurred. New owners are given a demo and there are instructions as well as video clips to help anyone who purchases new or 2nd hand BL's.

I'm sure the other +- 1,800 BL's out there have nothing to worry about....
