DTM (direct to metal) case black. Works like a charm and as good as it will get on a budget

I haven't had the best experience with Dtm after long term use, not very tough paint especially if you use as directed and paint direct onto bare metal. How did you prep the metal and did you use primer?

...thatís exactly what I did... had it sandblasted, cleaned with my tac and painted... no primer... if I have to do this again Iím going to hate myself

Eish. I hope it works for you.
I painted my gate with that stuff and it chipped of when I banged my car keys against it.
After a year I had sand the rust of and redo the gate.

I have had similar experience, absolute garbage, if anything it's a purely decorative quality paint not robust at all.

It does apparently adhere better if used with an etch primer but if you are using a primer then the whole direct to metal benefit of Dtm is negated and there are much better/tougher paints than Dtm available, nevermind Dtm isn't particularly cheap. Hammerite is marginally better but also not great and even more expensive.

If I was the op and he hasn't put things back together I'd get it sandblasted and repainted with something more durable. I went to huge cost in terms of my labour and time to touch up parts of my vehicle that had light rust with Dtm, not even a year later and its flaking off in some spots and I can often scratch it off with a thumbnail.

I complained to Dtm and spoke to their technical dept, the first thing these idiots tell me is you must use a primer on bare metal, face-palm of the highest order, sold as this amazing Direct to metal product..
