Taking that it is an android tv box?

You can load up the official Netflix and DSTV Now apps and watch. But with a valid subscription to those services.

Then as I have, loaded Kodi and use a Raspberri Pi as a NAS device (2TB drive attached) and stream all my local content to the TV box from the Pi.
Kodi has a bad rep because people load unauthorized add-ons to watch illegal content.

Why to recommend TV boxes that have 2 Gb memory and 8 Gb storage and more importantly why they are still sold? My oldest box has that. The latest 16 Gb/128 Gb. That one cost R600.00. I would not touch anything less than 4/32. Old versions of Android will work on 2Gb. New better to have min 4Gb. Gamers even more.

There is a lot over priced outdated boxes on the local market. Also better to have 3 USB ports instead of more or less standard 2.

Don't fall into the trap of buying mainly off the spec sheet.

My Xiaomi Mi Box S has 2GB of memory and 8GB of flash and I have never though, heck, I wish it was faster.

On these android boxes, are you guys able to install VPN software, so that you can watch Netflix and Amazon etc unrestricted? I find the content available on both those networks mentioned is very poor in South Africa, compared to what they offer in the UK & the States.

I'm assuming you asking which 3rd party apps to use on your media player box? If so....

On my MyGica 1960 I use Cyberflix and Cinema HD. Those are the names of the apps you'll need to download and install.
You'll need to download the latest versions of the .apk files (dot - apk - files). You'll find a video on YouTube that explains how to install said files...but it's really easy.

Once installed...open them up...choose series or movies....or search for whatever you choose to watch...choose a stream and off you go. All you need other than the media player box and apps is a good internet connection.

I have found anything with less than 4GB of RAM is laggy...buffers a lot and is generally slow.

This was/is my experience and it currently works for me. Maybe someone else has something better.

I also reached that point after trying some of the better media player options and having issues or them being hobbled in many ways.

Only advice when going with a laptop or pc is to get a decent wireless keyboard, preferably one with a trackpad so you can easily manipulate the mouse pointer

The stick is less powerful than the box, I think less ram as well.

I have VPN installed on all of my boxes. I use VPN very little. Sometimes for geo shifting to see some TV. I also used VPN when there was the cable problems on West Coast of Africa. Using VPN I could direct the traffic to go other way. No need to waste time with US or UK Amazon or Netflix. Far more is available by looking around.

I have an older Xiaomi TV device and loaded surfshark VPN on it. I am able to switch countries but it needs an extra step. Netflix "remembers" where you initially logged in from, say ZA, then when you connect to the US it displays the US catalogue. When you stream through it gives an error. The solution I have found to work is to "force stop" the Netflix application and try again. So far works 100% of the time.

I was for sale in local China shop. I did not specifically look for such. SWAMBO wanted one in her sewing room. Batch of the TV Boxes was intended for Portuguese market based on settings on the start up. Android confirmed the numbers when I checked.

2Gb is fine if the Android is Lollipop or Marshmallow, e.g. versions 5 and 6. Latest TV boxes are vers 10. I cannot remember if I have seen 11 yet.

I have bought local and I have bought from China. I will not import. Looking around locally you can find well priced units but you have to check what are the specks.

Nvidia Shield - once you've used one you'll never go back.
