Apparently bad, according to a local who drove it recently. There was a thread last week. https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...yus-to-ask-ham
I suggest driving via Botswana (Bokpots/Middelputs) if you personal and vehicle papers are in order. Lovely tared road. Short gravel route from border to VanZylsrus.

I travelled this road to visit a friend today.
I still would not recommend travelling it unless you have to.
Your vehicle takes a pounding for 140km non stop.
Not worth it in my opinion and everybody here agrees.

Travelled it on Sunday. It's terrible. Take the trans Molopo highway in Botswana. Perfect condition. You won't pass more than 5 cars along the way. It's an additional 50km though.

Is that the road in the riverbed, dont you have to open and close alot of gates on that road.

February last year on our way to Kgalagadi we missed the turn of to Middlepits very badly sign posted if not at all. Had to drive all the way to Askam.
What a disaster, BIL's cruizer VX long range tank broke off the brackets and lost a lot of petrol, his Xplora took a pounding and my SS water tank I had specially fitted to my Cheetah cracked down the the welded seems and could not hold water. That road is the worst road in South Africa the vehicle damage is untold.

Oh, did not realize it. Drove it with my 1978 w123 Mercedes platkar. Thought it was a nice dirt road. Drove it from border post to askam.

There was a few gates yes.

Amazing how perceptions and experiences differ, I arrived this afternoon back home after driving that road yesterday. It has some bad patches but a lovely 80-85km/hr drive. I deflate my tires by 15% and enjoy the ride. I sometimes use the Botswana road but due to current meat import regulations due to FMD could not go this way.

The roads in the Park are worse than this road (you do deflate to 1.4b and travel slower)

Going to KTP next week. Have been warned to avoid the R 31 between van Zylsrus and Askham. Most people on this thread seem to agree. Crossing into Botswana is not an easy option for me due to paperwork for children accompanying me.

    1. The sand road on the SA side of the border sounds like a nice adventure. Can anybody tell me how to find its start or where a sensible place is to join it? Also, on Google maps it seems to not run all the way between van Zylsrus and Askham, there seems to be a part missing in the middle. Can I stay on it all the way to Bokspits? We will be in a 4x4 Amarok. Children mentioned can open gates. :P

    2. If I do decide to cross into Botswana, do I drive from van Zylsrus to Middelputs on the shortest route?

    3. Is the R 31 OK between Kuruman and van Zylsrus over Hothazel?

    Any advice will be appreciated

I'm also leaving for the Kgalagadi next week. I will again take the R31 between Van Zylsrus and Askam. Did it last year and the road was only bad for a bout 20km's, but it probably depends on when it was scraped. The road crossing Botswana is very nice, but I don't want the trouble of getting cross-border letters and risk of meat being confiscated. I once did the sand road next to the fence by accident (took the wrong Van Zylsrus turnoff). It was fun initially but it just carried on and on. Going was slow because of the gates and narrow 2-spoor road in some places. Even the R31 at a very slow speed will be faster.

Good luck with the choices and safe travels.

Did the road last week. I think it really depends on how long ago it was graded, but we seem to have been lucky. Long piece of gravel in one stretch, but better than some Limpopo gravel roads I sometimes drive on. May have been graded recently.
