Default Waterberg Wilderness Reserve - a genuine safe and real 4X4 experience

This weekend was the 3rd time we visited the reserve and again it was magic all over. Maybe the magic lies in the remoteness of the reserve. Here you definitely need a true 4X4 vehicle and experience, just to get to the lodge. We have never used the more formal accommodation options but preferred the private camping sites with your own private ablution facility. There is no electricity but fairly good reception. The Reserve's own "van Zyl's pass" is a true challenge with beautiful views. Swimming is in natural pools along the stream. Walking trails in the mountainous rocky habitat keeps your adrenalin pumping. Alan, the owner visits you every night just to check that everything is all right.

Thanks for the update. Does anyone have some pictures of the campsite?

There are 5 or 6 sites, all very private with their own facilities.

Sites are about 100 to 200m apart.

On our last visit we stayed at Hoepoe campsite, but they are all nice.

Some are a little bigger and one consists of three sites bundled together with shared ablution for big groups.

Spent weekend 6 to 8 September 2019 at Waterberg Wilderness Reserve. 220km from Pretoria. The area is absolutely stunning. Unfortunately very dry at present. Will definately return after the area has had some rains. We stayed in the Safari Tents. Large and comfortable. Teething troubles with hot water supply attended to immediately, thanks Alan and Peter! Friendly, knowledgable owner and staff. Can recommend the area and facilities for a weekend away or longer. Lots to see and do, peace and quiet and unspoilt nature at it's best. We walked for many kilometers on the mountain paths and up and down the gorge surrounded by Giraffe and many other game species. Enjoyed the trails with the 4x4 and conquered the "mini Van Zyl's pass" You can add this spot to your "to visit" list.
