Default Leasure Wheels article Ama V6 vs X Class 350d

In the latest Leisure wheels article Hannes Grobler tests the 2 vehicles on a Dyno. 165kw Amarok V6 made 20HP more on the dyno than the 190Kw X class. Mercedes being optimistic with their figures or VW again being conservative?

what is the difference between kw, hp and nm? how much kw is 20hp? is kw and hp calculated based on torque? Does the relationship between kw and hp have more to do with torque than each other? What does a Dyno measure, hp, kw or nm? Does measure nm and then extrapolate kw and hp? Or does it measure all three independently?

    So many questions.

    Is VW better than Mercedes?

    No.

    Is VW better than Nissan?

    Maybe.

I suspect the Mercs sold here is "slightly" down tuned due to several factors. Diesel quality, climatic conditions, etc.

Well based on their flawed airconditioning design since they started moving the battery to the engine bay Is would have to say YES.

There is a huge problem with their airconditioning failing because the battery gasses enter the airconditioning systems and erodes these interior evaporator. Two of my close friends reported this problem and when I took my car for an aircon service I was surprised to see a Mercedes dash completely stripped. I asked the owner of the airconditioning shop and he explained to me that this is indeed a regular occurrence.

So don't let your judgement be clouded by badges and their high price tags dear sir...

Actual article here, with the figures being:
The X-Class peaked at 208hp or 155kW at 3 000r/min at the wheels. These figures are fairly accurate given that the manufacturer claims 190kW at the flywheel, taking into account the expected drivetrain losses of a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The Amarok produced 228hp or 170kW at 3 000r/min at the wheels. These figures mean that the Amarok makes more power on the wheels than the manufacturer claims it makes at the flywheel.

I must say, in my neck of the woods, I just don`t see these x class Mercs on the road, and when i do see one it is the 250. The only 350 I have seen so far is the one belonging to the local Merc dealer. It seems the peoples have not been bamboozled by the Merc/Nis creation around here.

    And then the conclusion:

Both bakkies are exceptional in all conditions and all testers were hard-pressed to decide which they would sign a cheque for. However, the Amarok is more than R200 000 cheaper than the X-Class in standard trim. “Only very passionate Mercedes-Benz fans would opt for the X-Class. The reasonable man would go for the Amarok every time,” concluded Grobler

Oh no, the air conditioning I forgot about that. Seeing as that is the only measure by which I judge a vehicle I guess then VW is better than MB.

I will try not to be clouded by my air conditioning issues in future.

VW has always been conservative with their numbers with anything that has a turbo on it.

    1) 20 Hp = 14.9kW
    2) kW and Hp is the same thing, only expressed in different units. Just like kilograms and pounds.
    3) kW is derived directly from torque, but incorporates the speed at which it is applied.
    The formula reads: kW=2 Χ Pi x Nm x rpm / 60000

A friend of mine is a Product Controller at the Wolfsburg factory and she has just taken delivery of her 190kW Amarok.
Her response to one of my questions was ... absolutely wicked power ... but unnecessary

These images are of her vehicle whilst out on a training run.

Would be cool to see if there is actually a "real" difference in power between the 165 and 190kw Amarok when they surface here

When-ever I read these articles, and even more so the comments made on which is better, I ask myself what it's based on.

Better for whom. Better for the Kalahari farmer who every 2nd day covers 200km of bad corrugations, and rescue sheep off a koppie, or better for the lady of the house who needs a foh-by-foh to fetch the children from Waterkloof high.

Why not just stick to raw fact, and stay away from opinions and perceptions.

Ag nee wat Sakkie, dan was die forum lankal dood.
The original LW article referenced stated that the VW's engine power is more than the Merc, based on actual testing. It then quotes Hannes Grobler as saying that he thinks the Amarok is a much better buy.
You can actually happily debate which of these two are the "best" as they are aimed at exactly the same market.
