What do you want to use it for ?

    Route planning? Waypoints and routes?

Downloading old Tracks from your Garmin GPS?

    Managing your Maps ?

    Base camp is free......

And you can download free map sets from OpenStreet maps to use in basecamp.

I find the basecamp software to be very good.

How does one import into Basecamp - could be useful for newbies...

Or you can use the older Mapsource, basic and very simple.

Try mapsource. App before basecamp which I prefer. Easy to use once you get the hang of it.

It is an exe file that you unzip . Follow steps as describe above.

For what it's worth I am also keen to have an alternative to Basecamp. Yes it is free, but that is about it's only redeeming quality. For all of the GPS/Garmin software developers out there who aren't reading this, I'd love to see some software that has the features of basecamp, as well as:
    1. Mac and Windows versions (I am a Mac user)
    2. Ability to more easily toggle on/off displayed map features. Basecamp makes this a bit of a chore, and I still can't always get things displayed off the map, since I don't always know what category Basecamp thinks they are assigned to, and I end up trial and error clicking on and off random features to try to get icons to go away and de-clutter the map. How about putting a little picture of icons that are in that category next to the check box?
    3. Ability to have live update distance/ETA when a route is adjusted, maybe in a little window on the sidebar. So when I drag a waypoint into a route I don't have to recalculate, click on a whole other window, etc.
    4. Ability to pull moving time out of a track's total time. I archive tracks daily on my GPS and upload to Basecamp when I get around to it. Then I look at a track and they all pretty much tell me it took 8 hours to get somewhere, but sometimes that's 4 hrs of driving and 4 hours of whatever farting around, and sometimes it's 8 hours of driving. When someone asks me how long it takes to get from x to y, I can't really tell them, because the data available to me has all my faffing around included, not just driving time.
    5. Ability to switch to google map satellite view when online. Would make route planning better.
    6. Ability to toggle routes on/off in a given collection, so that I don't have to look at every route I have ever created when I look at my Nambia waypoints, for example. Yes, I know, there are smart collections. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems like more of a chore than a feature.
    7. Greater clarification (or no difference at all) on the difference between RV, motorcycling and driving. What difference does that make? This I suppose is a user problem (me), not a software problem.
    8. Greater control over "avoidance" behavior. I never have any of the avoidance boxes checked, yet Basecamp routinely routes me someway that isn't what I want and I have to do all kinds of messing around to get it to go the more direct way. Fair point to Basecamp, this is more often a problem on my GPS itself than in basecamp.

...oh and lots of other things I can't think of right now.

    Thumbs down Re: Basecamp alternative

Blame the driver not the app.
