Default SFA Conversion - help a noob understand

    Hey 4x4'ers!

please bare with me on this long read, as I need to start from the start to put some context to my question.

last year I was in a pickle transport wise due to financial reasons. I was driving a 335i that was becoming a money pit and living on a plot the car was getting more damage than i was driving it. so I had to change to a bakkie. now the biggest problem was my settlement on the 335i so i had to find something that i could trade on and still load enough for the bank to accept a finance application. took me about 3 months to find something, I managed to pickup my Amarok, 2011 90kw trendline with 211 000km on, for R135 000. it was the best i could find conditionally wise for the price that could still be financed and loaded.

anyway - fast forward to now, i really wanted a 4x4 but just couldn't. been reading about conversions etc etc. and found SFA. now i'm trying to understand how it works but most seems to be only related to Hilux.

Is this something possible on an Amarok ? and what is the cost involved ? I really want to go offroading with my laities and get them into the bush vibe, but im afraid my 4x2 wont do the cut ?? (even though i have a difflock?) now selling is not an option as i bought the bakkie last year october, so im looking at the possible solutions, if any.

    1) You'd need to find a donor 4x4 Rok with the 4Motion system with the center diff and the computer module
    2) Even then, I'm not sure you could convert a Rok body to Solid Front Axle as you'd need to match axle diff ratios and find a way to mount the new front suspension components
    3) Doing the conversion will in most cases destroy any resale value

    My approach would be:
investigate if the 4x4 / 4Motion components can be fitted to the 4x2 version
find a donor vehicle with these items
plan on about month without a vehicle

Anything is possible: the question is if it is financially clever...........

My opinion: buy an old clunker 4x4 for R50k for weekend playing. Cheaper, faster, easier.

Plenty of good entry level trail vehicles out there. Stick with Land Rover, Toyota, Nissan, Jeep, etc. Stay away from Fong Yong and Korean stuff.

    ^^^^ What Reenen said.

We've done the sums on these several times.

And I'd be the first guy to say SFA if it was appropriate.

Your best bet would be to trade the Rok on any 4x4 including another Rok. If you want it for playing more than anything else there are cheap good options to be had. Starting with Dicovery 1 and 2`s. If you want to persist with the Rok, I believe the only option is to get hold of a scrapped 4 motion manual(for cheap. Good luck with that) and start swapping parts (front driveshafts + hubs, front diff, front propshaft, transfer case, centre gearshift control module and ECU). This would be quite possible.

i know nothing about the vw, but i have a mate who on a toyota, bought a 2x4, then bought all the 4x4 parts and had the fitted, cost him less then buying the 4x4. not sure if you can do that with a vw. not even sure if it has a low range, just that it has hundreds of auto gears.

90kw Amarok never came out in auto. Manual only and 4 x 4 with low range.

Maar sy vraag was SFA. SFA is heelwat meer as net n ifs donor swop...

If you know what to do a SFA conversion can be done over a weekend. I have done a few. If you understand the art of wheel trigonometry it is real easy.

Get it wrong and you ruin a perfect vehicle.

Now a SFA Amarok should be very nice. If I need to do this I would go fo a divorced transfer case setup and a set of Patrol diff`s.

SFA conversions need careful planing and a high level of mechanical skills. Can be a very rewarding project if done right from the start.
It is not what you buy its what you build.

Pity that Defenders are so expensive. A Disco is probably going to be the most car for the least money for you.
