    Default Ponta Malongane update

    Right, last minute trip.

Departure is Thursday @ 12h00, Overnight in Piet Retief area, entry the next morning via Kosi Bay border post.

Staying at Wakene in Ponta Malongane.

    What's the border post like?
How bad is the sand road to Malongane?
Any transito police down that way now that there is tar?

    Any other issues?

AND WHAT IS THERE TO DO around Malongane / Ouro apart from R&R and 2M in the pubs?

I hear there is a nice 4x4 drive?
Is the elephant park too far?
    Snorkelling is apparently good?

border is open to 19H00 for easter weekend
only thing to do there if you are not fishing or diving is to drive the paths through the dunes and visit all the pubs along the way and dodge all the 4 wheelers and bikes
Is the elephant park too far? not with the new road
    Snorkelling is apparently good?
yes it can be good fun to drift around in the bay in ponto with tubes ect

Jakes, I quoted Vudalbum's earlier post where there was nothing written. It has been edited in the meantime.

Let me know when you want a beer. The 'trol goes all places....

Pad is nie sleg na Malongane.
Elephant park nie baie ver nie maar in die park is die twee spoor sand paaie nogal los.
Malongane het so klein snorkel rif daar voor nogal lekker

We were there late last year,

Snorkeling is good, but im not sure with the recent storms etc.
Elephant park is about 2 hours? maybe less
4x4, yeah all over, mostly soft sand so prep for that
sand road to malongane, well i went there in my mahindra, hardly deflated tyres on it, just engaged 4x4
I didnt see any cops there

Jelo, we camped in Malongane from 14 - 28 March 2019.

Sand road from D'Ouro still requires a 4x4 in most places.

Drive with a watchful eye through D'Ouro as residential building works really picked up and building rubble is strewn all over the road. So tyre punctures is a real concern.

The border post was a breeze, we cleared it in less than 30 min (2 vehicles)

Oh yes, ASK for a gate pass. It is not given to you if you don't. Just to make sure you are not confronted unnecessarily.

The snorkeling is good in Malongane. You could go on the Dolphin excursion organized at the dive center and is arranged by a lovely lass named Courtney.

You can also opt for motorized paragliding which is also done there now, I forget the name now. If memory serves it costs about R1000 per person and it looked awesome! You'll see the signs as you drive past it. Skylodge I think it is called.

Obviously the diving was great as well.

Many many more little restaurants and little eating eating establishments since my last trip there about 4 years ago.

Oh yes, many of them including some of the shops now have POS systems in place and rands is accepted everywhere - I was pleasantly surprised. I do however believe they only accept Visa, not Master cards.

Saw no authorities or road blocks on the way to D'Ouro. But you will find them driving to Maputo to go view the new bridge. Military is present and yes, still looking for bribes. From the traffic circle where you turn of to D'Ouro, its about an hours drive to the bridge as it is go slow all they way through the elephant park with speed humps.

But a lovely road none the less.

    feedback:

    - border crossing was a breeze, all the officials on both sides worked together to minimise delays
    - tar road into Ponta is nice
    - road to Malongane is not for 4x2s regardless of tyre pressure and diff-lock (several knobs in Isuzus got stuck)
    - Moz is still reasonably cheap
    - Wakene lodge is mostly a dump and overpriced
    - Ponta tidal pool area is great for chilling
    - Pinto's and Beach Bar have 2M on tap
    - Avoid the Malboer bar in Ponta and Amigo's in Malongane at all costs, unless you are seriously kommin in which case you'll feel right at home
    - every single Touareg driver I saw drove like a chop
    - the Wrangler was in 4H for 4 days solid and behaved like the champ that it is, I didn't even bother to air down

    Sounds about right.

In my case, it was Ford Rangers though. 2 of them in 2x4 that got stuck.

    Guilty as charged...

We came back via Swaziland, although nice to go through there, in my opinion it was not worth the effort. Will go Kosi Bay there and back next year.

apart from some Limpopo knobs in Ford Rangers that thought 140 was the new speed limit and that overtaking into oncoming traffic is a good idea, not bad at all

and when we got to the border post, there was a queue anyway, and said knobs didn't have their paperwork sorted and I beat them to the Beach Bar for my first 2M draught........

My feedback to Moz Connection regarding Wakene Lodge:

    "Hi Lynette

    Feedback on Wakene:

    - booking was NEVER DONE at the venue, the local manager (Ranildo?) didn't know who we were, we were not on any booking schedule
    - unit was incomplete, unserviced, and indeed not ready for use
    - it seems that Hayley never ever completed the booking request
    - we had to clean the unit ourselves and in fact even fit linen, the unit was disgustingly dirty, with blood on the floor
    - unit is COMPLETELY over priced for what we received: I have stayed in better cassitas in Inhambane at HALF the price

I will NEVER EVER stay at Wakene again, and I am seriously reconsidering my continued support of Mozambique Connection.

    regards"
