Default Is a new Duster a good buy?

    Hi guys.

I am in the market for a 'new' car. Budget R340 - R380k all in.

Now, I am looking at several vehicles which includes in no specific order -
1 Caddy Alltrack 2.0 TDi DSG (this is actually what I want but its a tad too expensive)
2 Renault Duster 1.5dCi EDC Prestige (DEMO - I don't want to pay for that initial depreciation)
3 Ford Kuga 1.5t Trend Auto (but expensive and apparently quite thirsty)
4 Nissan Qashqai 1.5dCi Tekna (however Tekna is also too expensive might have to go for an Acenta Plus)
5 Ford Everest 2.2 XLT (drinks more fuel than I want to give it, 2.2 and 3.2 engine and gearbox issues has me worried as well as resale)
    6 Honda Civic 1.5t Sport

Now. I need to use this vehicle for work also which includes the occasional gravel road.

    MUST HAVES:
    1) I have a family of 4 so a small vehicle won't work.
    2) MUST be fuel efficient.
    3) MUST have gadgets - want to enjoy my hard earned vehicle.
    4) MUST be versatile.
    5) MUST have Warranty and Service Plan
    6) MUST have Torque, so it'll have to have a turbo. I don't want to struggle with a gutless thing
    7) MUST have decent resale - I don't want to sell it in 3 years in mint condition with low mileage for R100K

I plan on driving the vehicle for 2.5 - 3 years. When looking at the VWs they only come with a 3 year service plan and warranty and most of them are already 2 years old - that is a problem for me.

When comparing the Qashqai with the Duster, the Qashqai pins it on looks and quality in my opinion. BUT, it is about 80K more and it has 19inch tyres. I am sure those nineteens are not going to love potholes on our premium quality roads. Here the Duster wins it. But it just looks cheap to me. I never thought I would be looking at a Renault.... Are they good? Resale values? Quality? Problems? Parts Availability?

PLEASE talk to me. I am tired of fighting with myself and lying awake at night thinking about what to buy.

    renault is a funny brand.

    you get renault/dacia, renault/nissan, renault/merc, Renault/Renault

personally I think the Dacia duster is cheaply build and will never buy one, however a lot of people will argue that.
Forget about the Honda. It's not meant for gravel travel.

from your list I think the Qashqai ticks the most of your boxes.
    Don't forget about the x-trail.
There are some good demo models in your price range.

Hi Andre', personally, I would steer clear of Ford, out of personal experience. I went through a R80 000 engine replacement on my bakkie.
My wife drives a Ford Ecosport, and the interior quality is sub-par. The after-sale service of Ford is also something I would not wish for my
    mother-in-law.

Might I suggest a pre-loved, previous generation Rav? The new Rav was just launched, so the previous shape might be more available
second hand now. They have generous space, and being Toyota, will have good resale value.

I am not inclined to drive French cars in South Africa, and VW is a hijacking waiting to happen (in my opinion)

    Duster is more off-road worthy.

Qashqai is am impressive vehicle, my sister had one for a while and I really liked it.

I went and drove a Duster EDC this morning. All I can say is that I was really impressed with it. Honestly, the Transmission is smooth and shifts very quickly. Torque is great and the car feels solid.

I don't know if it's the right decision but I think... I'm going to go for it..

I will however still go and drive a Qashqai. My only worry is those low profile tyres.

I would look at a Subaru XV. Has all wheel drive, reliable and the 2 liter is not bad on fuel.
Excellent family vehicle in my opinion.

Yes, the 4x4 is still coming. But I won't buy it anyway, I don't do offroading, just an occasional short dirt road

Do you really want the Auto? The diesel is a very nice engine, the 2.0L petrol is very pap for some reason.

Just remember to search for duster under Dacia and not Renault.

Eish 3 stars for a Duster? I would have thought Renault would do better.

    2 more than Jelo's Jeep.

What did it lose stars for? Pedestrian safety and lack of automatic accident prevention controls I'm sure.

I thought a Lexus is a safe vehicle to drive until my neighbor was hijacked for his 2012 Lexus IS250. Nothing is safe, its just your luck.

Look at a nice Volvo XC 60. At that price you can pick and choose.

Also have a look at the new Subaru...........VERY VERY VERY nice.

This is all coming from a HUGE Toyota fan, by the way

I have been really thinking HARD about this one. At this stage the Duster is the only one that ticks ALL my boxes and also suits my budget.

I've had a look at the Rav, 2.2diesels are expensive or high milers, 2.0 petrols are too pap for me, 2.5 is WAAAY too thirsty. Roughly the same story with the X-trails.

Oh, I had a look at XC60 and V40Cross country also. I've owned a Volvo and I loved it!

However, the V40 doesn't have the softroad capability nor the bootsize of the Duster (and is alot more money - I can only JUST get a D3 Inscription at the limit of my budget). In my price range XC60 are quite old and pretty much out of service plan. And let's face it, resale values are horrendous (been there done that). I certainly don't want a Volvo without a service plan/warranty again. Ever.

    Some feedback from my perspective.
Bought the late 2015 facelift Duster 4wd (new, in Dec’15).

Just completed the 75kkm service this week. First replacement pads fitted.
Warrantee claim for the hooter stalk. Replacement part available next week (parts lady said 3days after paperwork done, so we’ll see).

No other issues. Standard services not that bad considering. 90kkm service is going to be R10k apparently... not looking forward to that.

Due for first set of replacement tyres.

Body is very soft & dents/scratches very easily. Not sure about new model.

Handles dirt and mud very well, taking ground clearance into account.

Loads of space for its size. I’ve got a dual battery system which gets fitted if we it carry the fridge. No issues.

Fuel consumption is very good compared.

My wife has been driving it for almost a year now. Says she loves it... but just daily tar driver.

    Resale is ###.

I’ve owned many 4x4’s and the duster is definitely a great contender if you’re just doing gravel/mud & short trips (packing space, not distance. Comfy long distance driver!). Or daily driving, nice power .

Not for long trips (space issue) with family, or serious 4wd’ing.
Keep it for a long time or lose on resale.

Looking back I’d do it again. But I’d add protective body strips & maybe vps or wrap.

hope that helps. Welcome to ask questions.

Oh yes, security system sucks!! Replacement lock barrels come from France.

My only experience in the new one, is that it goes like a bomb! Unsure what model I was collected in though (to recollect vehicle after service). Auto very smooth!
    Mike
