Default Fooling Around with a Middle Aged Gypsy.......with Pics

So yesterday I was in Roodepoort for a Contract, and decided to sommer go pick up the caravan I bought from a very good friend and Client of mine in Edenvale.
Actually stole it, not bought it. Thanks again Doug
1983 Gypsey Caravette 6, with 15' tyres, upgraded axle, nicely done oustide.
The interior is a wee bit crappy........BUT the Seller gave me a ton of camping goodies, shower, water tanks, etc etc etc with to make my dreams come true.
Towing it back home, I just could'nt believe how light she is behind the Prado.
I also took the Frankfort - Reitz road on purpose, to see how she behaved on that semi Baboons Pass potholes.
No issues, with only one little cupboard door open when I arrived home.
Got MANY MANY cool plans with this..............I'd like to ask questions/advise as I move along, if that's OK with everyone.
In the mean time here she is in all her glory, taken yesterday on her way back to the beautiful Eastern Free State:

I'm adding a sort of Cost Breakdown as I'll be moving along, actually more for my own records but may also be of interest to others:

    1) Price Paid.............................................. ..........................................R 30000
    2) Ply boards, adhesives, screws, etc etc on 10/04...................................R 1800
    3) 2x Bed Frames made, labour and material.......................................... .R 1674
    4) Angle Iron and Woodoc............................................ .........................R 1087
    5) Nuts, Bolts, Drill Bits, etc etc............................................... ..............R 720
    6) 2 x Lids, hinges, screws, etc etc............................................... ..........R 1122
    7) Replace window fittings, Door stop.............................................. ........R 390
    Alu chequered plate sheet, 2mm............................................... ..........R 1134
    9) Plastic Drawers, 6 Drawer...………………………………………………………………………..R 850
    10) Interior paint, roller, brushes, etc etc............................................... ..R 764
    11) Canvas Work, Tentco............................................ ...........................R 2850

PLEASE SEE POST 14 UNDERNEATH, I'M ASKING ADVISE AND QUESTIONS IN THERE, ALL AND ANY HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED!!

Ja ag Dewald dis 'n OU ding maar hy gaan die job doen.

I just finished unpacking a TON of camping stuff that Doug gave me with this vantjie.

    Its far from a new Sprite Tourer.........but R 30 000 is even furter away from R 300 000.

It also has this funny thing in a bag I got with it - as new. Looks like a geyser/shower contraption.

Keep an eye on the Smalls...........I really REALLY have to start selling of my camping stuff, getting WAY too much in my way now.

What I think I should get ASAP:

    1) Awning like Eezie Awn, but it will have to be wide enough to "include" the clip on alu table outside. The original rally looks still great though, and Doug sez it "wraps" down the sides - I'll try put it up some time today and see.
But I'd love an awning with all poles and penne en hammer inside. I'm lazy AND short.
    2) When travelling on that (terrible) potholed road yesterday I did notice some "sway". I think shock absorbers added to the leafs would be a very worthwhile addition. Oom Henk - you were 200% correct in that. I think shocks, with deflated tyres, will sort this out almost completely.

Join the club. My trailer is for sale in the Classified, Dave Coombs just relieved me of a wad of cash for a Cheetah. Not going to know ourselves, first trip Easter weekend to trial in Mkhuze, then May and June to Bots and Nam.

    Some general notes:
    - water proof plywood is the material to use
    - chip board an silicon is no go for a van
    - Open windows and look under seals. You should see solid wood. If not then condensate did get in.
    - As a floor cover "plastic" floor on plywood and loose carpets like those "take dirt".
    - Put 220 V wall plug assembly to the van wall. Location is where you place your outside table.
    - You will need outside light for rally or similar. We never carry any tents if it is 2 of us.
    - Power cable and extension for it. Something to protect the connection.
    - If you change the fridge the size is a problem. Old vans used to have gas/12V/220V fridge. Family member changed one and had to change many items because of the size.
    - Always store under cover
    - Replace all gas pipes if even small issue with them.
    - Van body is far from rigid. Anything too rigid is a problem. When you level the van you will find this out. So be careful with anything you build.
    - you need weight on the car. Tray of beer in a wrong place is a big no no. I do not tow under 70kg on the hook.
    - Check bearings, brakes, grease the moving part in the tow end and adjust brakes.

If you take these old road vans on sand then expect doors falling off, axles breaking... Rather tow them on good roads to a place, park and use the vehicle to to go around.

I'll either be using the Weekender fridge, or then a bigger 12volt double door unit like Dometic/Defy......just wanna check how much they chow a battery.
    - Always store under cover......yip, problem for me - it stands under shade net
    - Replace all gas pipes if even small issue with them......here, again, I don't even want a gas bottle if possible. I have a double burner Alva with those small built in cartridges - works VERY well

I must admit, when I read the title of this thread I wasn't expecting an old caravan...

It also stands too high behind the Prado, I'll definitely be moving my gooseneck down.

Petri I have never towed a caravan as I have no use for them, but maybe you should do the planned spacers to the axle before deciding to lower the gooseneck on the Prado?

Wicus ja, ook nogal so gedink. Anders is die g/neck nou weer te lag vir die bote en bike trailer.

I definitely think Robbie is on the money with that rear spare contributing to the (slight) sway.

But will fine tune that - when packed and a little more weight on the nose etc etc I think all should be well.

Or. then, if all else fails, move the spare and carrier somewhere else.

    Petri,

Please keep it coming Guys, you are being FAR more helpful here than you can imagine.
