Use blind rivets that are closed / sealed on the end. Once you have drilled the hole put a squirt of sealant in the hole before inserting the rivet. It works very well to prevent moisture ingress.

Thanks for great advise - again.

My plan is to have some sort of canvas storage bag thing there, for books/phones/whatever, and have the bag "sunken" into the veneer (that's already taken off there anyway), hence I'm thinking of something sturdy(ish) to attach that bag to.

The rest of the timber underneath and lower looks and sounds 100%, I've poked everywhere with a long needle and knife and I dont get anything soft/moist/rotten.

I think I'll just put a frame in there with one or 2 "uprights".

Just received the bed frames. Nice and big, and VERY light.

I've thought of having an island bed at the rear, but it just wont works - too narrow at the sides, and the overhead cupboards wo'nt be user friendly.

Will just ask Jaco to move one of the "feet", and then I'll make it an off-center bed.

Made the frames higher than it were, 38cm high.

    The front :

I'll be moving the rear bed to the LHS of the van (to the Right hand side in Pic), there are some rakkies and stuffies that I plan to make from canvas then right at the "foot" of the bed.
I may also want to do a lightweight, canvas clad low little wardrobe or something against the opposite wall, and then there will be enough space to get it there.
An island bed just wont work here, and LOTS of space wasted in this particular setup caravan.

I'll see how to attach the bed frames.........just through the floor, or maybe add an alu strip or something in the width, and make the floor even "tauter".

No need for a strip if your floor is as solid as it looks.

Ag Robbie, I need something solid underneath to secure the fronts to anyways, so can just as well put a 2mm or so alu square underneath and bolt it down for keeps.
Either alu plates or I'm also thinking zipped canvas - you then dont need to lift the lids every time. But then I'll need something "solid" to stop stuff sliding around

And the Island Bed is now an Off Center 195 x 155 cm Double bed

MUCH nicer, lots of space at the wall for an additional little shallow cupboard thingie

OK.............that front panel is a lot stiffer, added a DIY jobbie alu angle from inside the nose cone, and it works.

    Monday:

    1) Sealer on Floor, various coats - thanks for Tip
    2) Secure bed frames on floor, will figure out how to sommer integrally also further stiffen/strengthen the floor
    3) Reinforce the nose with alu square, and also a new alu window frame.

    Tuesday:

To my tjommie at Battery Sentrum :

    1) Spacers
    2) Check and "find fault" underneath and repair/replace

This needs to be sort of "towable" next weekend, my 2 oldest kids want to use it at Lush in Clarens.

Petri, maybe put a full length flat bar underneath the feet of the bed frames to spread the load a bit wider than the point load of the individual feet.

Those new Ratels and Xplorers etc etc are also SO nice.

But ja, this is something "different", I wanted something cheap to turn into something funky and sort of personalised for the odd weekend away, the kids can also use it, and something to stay in when we go fishing and boating at Sterkfontein and Midmar and so on.

We're not really this "dedicated" caravanners/campers (yet), so a R 300 000 van just doesn't warrant the financial outlay for now.
When you go fishing at Sterkies, stay in the chalets. Especially if you are a pensioner they are so cheap its not worth towing the "van" or camping. However, a warning, bring your own camping cutlery and crockery etc as the stuff has been stolen so don't rely on the chalets being fully kitted out as they are supposed to be! Never the less, an absolute bargain of note. The other problem is you can't tow the boat and the caravan so you end up having to take 2 vehicles with 2 lots of petrol and 2 x tolls etc. You could tow a "train" which I have done before but consider it to be too dangerous and frankly I feel should be forbidden.

    1) Dilute the first coat so it soaks into the ply, then let it dry enough to allow you to walk on it without being taai like fly paper. Apply the next few coats.

I'd get 75x75x2 steel plates and put them under the feet and under the floor to spread the load. Use a bolt through the middle to secure the frame and 4 gutter screws on each corner with 2 nuts on the bottom and the end of the screw peened over with a hammoer.
A dab of Duram 195 to seal the holes underneath after that.
    Cheers,
    John

Or this, but I'd still also go underneath to give the floor a bit of relief, too. Or those monster fender washers would do, too.

Nope, you aren't alone, was a bit of a let down to start reading further, but it has turned out a lot more informative for me, so a win.
