Smile Defender 110 300tdi rebuild- its a slow thread........

I need to start sharing this. Funny how one can be excited over a 20+ year old vehicle...... (From now on referred to as "Oupatjie" )
So clearly i am a LR fan but unfortunately have 11 thumbs when it comes to mechanics. Luckily my good friend Hennie is now retired, been working on LR's for 40years since the Rhodesian army and have time on his hands.

The Project: Taking a 1996 300tdi pickup/station wagon, strip it to the bones, rebuild it, change it to a high capacity cab / bin and get someone (still deciding who) to slap a camper on the back.
Costs: I paid 20k for the defender which has a very good chase and suspension, transfer box and diff's were redone but with blown engine due to water pipe blocked. I will at the end out of interest sake list my expenses and what has been done.
The idea is to replace or rebuild EVERYTHING from the hubs to the roof.

    Started with this:

I'm keen to follow this project.
FYI I just spent the best part of 3 months reconditioning my 300tdi. I'm not an 'absolute expert' but I do know my stuff on that engine. I'm no very happy I made a few decisions while the motor was apart which I'll share with you.
I decided to replace the oil pump gears as well as the banjo bolts that squirt the underside of the pistons to keep them cool. Most people wouldn't bother replacing them but I feel it makes a huge difference to the longevity of the engine.
Now it's in the car and running I have good oil pressure and the engine is running cool.

    Good luck!!
