    Default 2008 KB300 DTeq Extended Cab 4x2 Tapping/Knocking Sound Swirl Flaps

    Good Day Isuzu Fundis

    Anyone wish to give an opinion on the tapping/knocking sound?
    Bakkie has 229000Km on the clock.
    Engine was completely overhauled at 174000, Block and Cylinder Head.
    Not overheating
    Oil fine
    Runs well

    I was on a journey back from the Overstrand to drop off stuff at my daughters house in The Strand and just 2km from her house I suddenly picked up this tapping/knocking sound. I drove slowly to my daughters house and left the bakkie there.

    1) It looks like some of the engine mountings are broken or loose.
    2) It could be a broken valve seat or injector tip that has broken off.
    3) Drop the sump and check that all the bearing caps are tight. Bearing knock.
    4) Oil pressure OK?

    As i stated in point 3. Bearing knock. Engine will have to be dismantled to ascertain the damage and cause. Drop the sump and check the bearings. A secondhand import would cost you less than a complete rebuild.

    Why was the engine redone very rare its not a ford 😂😂 that sounds like injector knock to me did 4 injectors on a kb6 kb300 becuse of filters not changed and poor maintance isuzu motors dont just give up for nothing get some one with a diagnostics that can read the injectors at idle it will tel u straight and if u need injectors have a contact for them for a good price as dealers are mad

    Hi Pieter.
    I will go for the secondhand import and avoid a rebuild if that is the case as the motor was already stripped, has oversized pistons plus the head cannot be skimmed again according to Basticks.
    Lets hope its something less serious. Will be transporting the bakkie to the mechanic today if all goes well.

    Got someone coming to take a closer look tonight and determine if its the injectors or the bearing.
    The plan is to replace motor with secondhand one if its the bearing or fix if its the injectors.
    Found a motor at Mike's Place which is complete excluding aircon and starter with 80000km, but frightfully expensive.
    Couple of emails come in this morning with options for a 4JG2 motor at 20K less than Mikes offering, says it will fit.

    Yes, who would of thought an Isuzu would give you so much sh1t after all the tender care I gave it over the last 10 years.

    Holding thumbs for u for just injectors for now please dont go backwards with the 4jg2 also has a cambelt sadly motor thats like kb280 teritory ive seen dteq motors go for 45k on exchange not sure what u were quoted

    I too had to rebuild my engine, with just over 200000kms. Cost was very high, Mike's Place told me they don't import these engines, maybe they've changed their minds.

    Remtech quoted in the region of R90k for a complete rebuilt motor.

    4JG2 engine will make your smile go right around your head. Gives the same fuel consumption as the 2.8 and will run rings around the d-tec. Spares are available from Autozone

    99% sure now.
    A Turbo/Swirl/EGR flap came loose and ended up in Cylinder 1.
    Same issue encountered by Oom in this thread, also on cylinder 1, also 2008 model.

    I would remove those flaps complety if i was u i dont think u want to do it for a 3rd time

    Yep 3rd time we are working on this motor.....
    My sad history with Izuzu KB300DTeq 2008 which I bought in 2009.
    1. 2015: Engine sub-assembly rebuilt due to gudgeon pin on cylinder 1 turning on the sleeve.
    2. 2018: Cylinder head removed due to water jacket leak between cylinder 3 and 4.
    3. 2019: Cylinder head, intake manifold and cam shafts all replaced due to swirl flap failure on cylinder 1.

    I queried the mechanic in regards to the swirl flaps now, said he has tightened the screws up with locktite on the new intake manifold we acquired.
    I was going to suggest to him to remove those flaps but considered that he knows a lot more about vehicles than I do and furthermore I don't really care anymore about this bakkie, its nuts and bolts to me now. I'm sure it will be fine from this point forward.
    Pity to end up with that attitude, as I have spent many good years in that cabin.

    They are putting the engine back in the bakkie today so my story isn't over just yet....

    Good question that niggles my mind too. Perhaps some other forum members could offer opinions and also what changes GM made on the 4jj1 motor from the years 2008 onwards.

    What I know:
    Oom had the same swirl flap issue with his bakkie, 2008 KB300 DTeq, cylinder 1, extended cab, only difference Oom has a 4x4, mine a 4x2.
    Mechanic stated that when he was looking for parts last week, one supplier mentioned they had 9 4jj1 motors like mine this year alone with the same swirl flap issue. But I would need to question him again as to iron out that story.
    Oom's bakkie had 157000 on the clock, mine 229000.
    Given that these vehicles are just over 10 years old I suspect the common denominator would be the high mileage and possibly all the same 4jj1 variant. The screws would work loose over time, bakkies with higher mileages in other words.
