Those of you who know Bainskloof well will appreciate the absolute stupidity of this. It boggles the mind!

Some years ago while on holiday in the UK a bus driver drove a double decker (luckily it was empty and had an 'out of service ' sign) into a low railway bridge in Sussex. A lot of mess to clean up as the top deck came off like the top of a tin of bully beef.

The driver was indeed an Englishman...

Well if you look at the rail road bridge in Muizenberg its basically the same.Been there since I dont know when and still a truck will get stuck under it every now and then.Actually quiet often.
Well built very strong bridge that as it has taken many many hard knocks.

I think part of the problem is that the clearance is given as 2.5m (I think), but it looks a lot more than that. Some drivers probably look at the clearance and think the sign is way to conservative.

There are actually chains hanging on both sides of the pass to show the permissible height, although the one on the Wolseley/Worcester side I think is lying damaged on the side of the road. There are however numerous warning signs and I'm sure also a sign with the maximum size truck that may enter the pass.

Regardless of the height, that pass is full of tight corners and many places where there are hardly enough space for two cars to pass(for many drivers anyway), let alone trucks. He should not have been on that road at all.

And ignore the traffic lights and numerous other flashing lights that are activated by the sensors that measure that the truck is too high before it gets near the bridge.

Amazing how good the road was back then. It reminds me how young our country is, when compared to old civilised countries. Today I happened to scan the first farm title deeds (KZN) of our farm from 1858. The roads in the area would not have been much older. A bit sad to see this early amazing progress regressing.
