Many do because they can save toll money for the tunnel. Many of the drivers are instructed by their bosses to bypass the tunnel by using one of the passes. It is expensive to drive a big rig like that through the tunnel!

I'd like to fine truck owners and truck drivers for doing that.

National roads are constructed to handle large trucks: many older regional roads are not. The damage to the roads is often visible and permanent.

The damage to the roads are due to overloading of vehicles, regardless of all the weigh bridges and inspection centra on our highways. As with skipping the toll through the tunnel, the bribe paid when an overloaded vehicle is weighed, is less than the profit from the overweight load.

When a truck enters a traffic control centre (weigh bridge), and the scales measure over, then there is NO WAY for him to get off with a bribe... The system is such that all activity on the scales are logged and reported at the end of the month. This then gets matched to the traffic violations issued...

I think the bribes are paid to not be put on the scales.

Even this would be tricky. Once they are in the weighing lane, there are boom gates to either let them through (according to their weight on the pre-weighing, by use of a WIM (way in motion)), or direct them to the weigh bridge... This is not a manual system...

I remember back in my navy days a Simba Chips truck with a flimsy fiberglass type box at the back got wiped out by the bridge about 3 or 4 vehicles in front of me.The fiberglass box was shattered and there were boxes of chips everywhere.
I enjoyed a large packet of Simba chips with many other people while watching the commotion and waiting for the traffic cops to turn us around.
Honestly not sure why these trucks dont use the railway crossing in Muizenberg.

The alternate route to avoid the Huguenot tunnel is the Du Toit's Kloof Pass, not the Bainskloof pass. It's legal to use trucks on the Du Toit's alternative. The tunnel only saves 11 kilometres.

Not if youíre coming from Ceres or Witzenberg with fruit, or from the Tankwa Karoo with sheep. Then Bains is your first option.

A bit off the topic; something I canít understand is the mentality of the people who would carry a load of rubbish bags up the pass and then dump it over the side at the pull offs?

One can fairly safely assume he was drastically speeding to be able to do that to the trailer-on such a narrow and blind stretch

-thankfully the rock saved any potential victims of a thundering truck-down-a-scenic-pass 'accident' further on.

This 'driver' should have his licence suspended-and more! -and the operator should charged for not keeping tabs on his trucks ( easiest thing to do nowadays with sat/cell tech. -especially for bigger operators /farms.

doesn't matter, the rest of his post is pertinent: the truck operators ALL have cell/satellite real-time trackers, they KNEW he was there
