    Default It's Happened-2013 2.2 DC 4x4 166 000km Turbo failed and caused engine damage

So 3 Days before my trip into Bots, I was driving on the highway and lost power and saw alot of white smoke coming out of my exhaust.
I pulled over right away and turned off the engine. I opened the bonnet and just saw oil everywhere.
Tow truck arrived and off to Ford to get checked out.
Ford Said that it needs a new engine & turbo estimated cost R97 000.00

My Extended warranty which I took out through Bidvest cost me R45 000.
So I felt confident that this was going to be covered.
Bidvest requested all the documentation as well as a "strip & quote" .
So my brain had done the maths and thought that Bidvest had looked through all the documentation, everything was good and now they want a "strip & Quote" to get the detailed damages & final costs.
So I have to agree to this strip & quote work which was estimated at R4800, before Ford does it, Which I did agree to.
Bidvest received the documentation and a few days later declines the claim due to the last 2 services we not done at an approved dealership.
The last 2 services were done at an RMI approved dealership.
My point of argument is that the reason for the damage was due to the turbo failing(Confirmed by the report), and the turbo is a non-serviceable part on the vehicle, so if it got serviced at a Porsche dealership in Germany or a blind back yard mechanic, the turbo would still have been the problem.
I wrote letters & complaints but it just gets declined.
I asked for a list of approved service dealers from bidvest, and they could not give me the list.
I asked them why did they request the strip & quote before going through the documentation, their replay was" to speed up the process and to not inconvenience the client" what a load of bull. I asked for a standard that they need to follow interms of claims- they could not give me one.

So at the end of the day my bakkie is standing at home with a disassembled engine and I had to pay the strip & quote fee. Its not a lekker feeling when you drive home and see your vehicle in pieces.
I do understand that I did not service it at an approved dealership, but my goodness, to pay R45000 and get this customer service from a company is absolutely mind blowing!

If anyone knows of a trustworthy company that can fix this bakkie without me having to sell my kidneys or any other suggestions,I would appreciate it!

    Regards
    Tarzan

Service can have a bearing (pun intended) on the turbo failure.
The wrong oil or service interval could possibly cause turbo bearing failure.

Was it a specific clause in your contract to have it service at an "approved dealership"?
If so, they should have stated what / who the "approved dealerships" are.

    You have 2 choices:

    - phone around the scrapyards for an engine
    - phone around the Ford dealerships for a crated factory engine

Eish not nice, but how can the extended warranty cost 45k??
Sorry to tell you but you will have a hard time fighting that, the same happened to a contractor of mine, basically they will say that the turbo would have been on a checklist to inspect for wear and that the RMI workshop may not have had it.

I had a catastrophic turbo failure on my Pajero.
    I replaced the turbo.

How and what of the rest of the engine was damaged by the turbo failure?

What engine damage occurred? did it run bearings?. ie did you keep going for a while after the turbo failed or kill it immediately.
It's actually very rare and I have almost never seen a turbo failure cause engine damage unless you keep running the motor till it is out of oil.
I have said it a LOT of times. Very few of the aftermarket warranties are worth the paper they are written on.
They will always find a way to skirt the responsibility.

@tarzanwelman - do you have the policy document of your extended warranty? It should say in there exactly how you should have serviced the vehicle.

I have an extended warranty on the Amarok, and it states "RMI workshop". It is, by the way, also a Bidvest product - but could be a completely different policy.

I recently walked away from a Ranger 3.2 deal, following all the reported issues on the forum with this engine. I did request an extended Ford Warranty on that Ranger and this was what I was quoted:
    7 Year, 140,000km = R10,324
    6 Year, 200,000km = R14,729
    7 Year, 200,000km = R16,201

Maybe the warranty gives some peace of mind, however, Ford is not going to roll over when the proverbial hits the fan, so I decided the combination of risk of failure and the guaranteed subsequent war with Ford, to get any issues that might occur sorted out, is not worth the effort.

I think the Everest will be my last Ford.

I know, but the frequency of the same engine and troubles are disturbing.

and to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure it is a bad product

most failures have been 1 or more of the following:

    - chip tuning (over fuelling, bypassing ECU safety logic)
    - no mechanical empathy (drive it like a V6 petrol)
    - bad services (badly trained, rushed mechanics)
    - bad technical service bulletin and recall compliance (bad service delivery managers)

(I'm sure somebody can confirm or refute, this is just my impression)

The last 2 are indeed at the door of the dealer, but as far as I recall, most brands in ZA have similar issues with poor service levels and poor technical compliance.

My brother in law bought 3.2 Rangers for ALL his reps. I spoke to him when he bought the new Everest: NOT 1 FAILURE IN THE 10 VEHICLE FLEET IN 5 YEARS.
    Why not?
    - good relationship with the dealer service manager
    - vehicle became the rep's property when the vehicle had been taken off the books for tax (asset as a bonus)

So the services were good and the reps treated the vehicle as an asset.

    Thanks for the questions Gents,

    Photo's of damages attached.
I was on a freeway doing +/- 120 km/h so the bakkie did travel around 1km before I could stop.
I have gone through the extended warranty documents thoroughly.

I have come to the conclusion that these Extended warranty people are not our mates.
    Thanks for the feedback gents.

Friend had the 3.2 misfortune at 70 000kms.
serviced at ford from day one.
He never drove over the speed limit or tackled anything worse than a bad gravel road.

Warrantee claim was however paid in full (R140 000)
