    Default My 2A Forward Control

    The beginning.

    Bougainville P.N.G 1974.
My wife and I heard of this down the south end near Buin.
Went for a look and got it for a couple of cartons.
    Ex Catholic Mission.

I had made an A frame in anticipation.
Towed it back to Kieta with our old diesel wagon.
    Much younger then.

I like looking back at these. We had a good life up there back then.
Had about 4 or 5 rivers to cross to get back home. Some worse than others. Got bogged in this one and had to unhook and connect a tow rope to the A frame to get out.
Lots of encouragement from the locals.

Buin is on the other side of the dividing range on Bougainville to Kieta. Going down towards Panguna where the giant BCL Copper mine was we came across them pulling this log out so had to wait up a bit. After we left Bougainville the Mine shut down after a dispute with the locals.
You can still see it on Google Earth last time I looked it was overgrown.

From Panguna and the Mine site we kept descending down to Arawa the mine town then Kieta to our house at Toniva on the outskirts.
I am a bit of a hoarder and the Mine dump held an attraction for me. It was open to the locals to salvage what they wanted. I dragged a Hyab crane home and mounted it on the drawbar of a tip trailer I also salvaged and powered the hydraulics with a small engine.
It came in handy removing the old seized 6 cylinder petrol and replacing it with a near new one I removed from a 86" Landy I built in Mt Hagen a few years previously. (Another story).

I dont know if you are interested or not but the Bougainville Copper Limited Mine was said to be the largest open cut copper and gold mine in the world.
I got to fly over it in a chopper once while doing my job.
Its a bit off topic so if I am not allowed this just delete them

The Ore was made into a slurry and pumped over the mountain then ran down hill to Loloho the Port where it was loaded onto ships.
The Bougainville people wanted more of the share so decided to try for Independence from PNG. Of course that was denied and led to riots.
They burnt down Police Stations etc but no go. Ended with the Mine closing.

I think around 28 or so. I was a Kiwi originally. Did Ag college then left for Australia in 67. No Passport required then.
Bought a 1963 Land Rover Pilchers Ambulance ex Woomera Rocket Range. Handy for working my way around Oz till I jagged a job in PNG as a Livestock Officer with the Dept of Ag Stock and Fisheries. Sent to Mt Hagen in the Highlands. When I left there on transfer to Kavieng in New Ireland Provence (Paradise) I sold the Ambo to a School teacher and took a Series one shortie with me. I had built this up with a new crate 6 cylinder rover motor for 100 bucks that I squeezed in. Went like the clappers. The 6 has the same bell housing bolt pattern as the original engine.
Anyway went to New Ireland as District Livestock Officer. and Meat inspector after we got a Rural Slaughterfloor going. We were starting small holder cattle projects. 10 cows and a bull on a bank loan to the local land holders.
Problem was in the Highlands especially, if they wanted a "Sing Sing" they got more Kudos if they had the biggest cow to eat so they often knocked off the Bull. That buggered the repayments on the loan
    Here is my shorty.

My New Ireland posting was an important point in my life.
Firstly I married my wife and secondly we built a 39 ft ferro-cement, centre cockpit, ketch in which we sailed to Bougainville when transferred there.
We moored in in the harbour at Kieta and lived in the Govt house.
Lawlessness was on the rise, not by Bougainvilleans but by "redskins" as Bougainvilleans called the Highlanders from mainland New Guinea.
They come looking for mine work and when not finding it live in squatter camps surviving best they can.
They broke into the yacht. We slept on board then they broke into the house.
We had spent 6 years or so here on Bougainville now and as my current contract was due for renewal we decided to pull the pin.
Sent all our gear to Australia and we sailed away.
Eventually we decided on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland, bought a canal house block and with an owner-builders licence started building a house, while living on the yacht anchored in the canal out back. This was now 1980. Could not do this now.

Excellent story. Is there anything you CAN'T do? Seems you were not scared of working anyway.
