    Default The savuti.....

Four days in Savuti seemed long, as all the sightings i expected in Savuti , got them first day, enroute. Left Maun at 0530 and Just after sankuyo Village, saw wild dogs by the main road. They seemed to be hunting and after few minutes disappeared into the bushes.
Few kilometres before Mababe, where there is a detour to the water channel, saw a leopard walking along the route. Note: they are building a New Detour route around that water channel before mababe village, I think it will be in use very soon. So far, wild dogs and leopard ticked on my list of TO BR SEEN.

Was advised to use the Sand Ridge route as the Marsh route was still wet after the rain season. Few kilometre from the entrance, you will start the Mababe Depression. There were thousands and thousands of Zebras, stretching for kilometres. Its really beautiful across that Mababe depression. Coming along there zebras, are lions. Few kilometres into the Depression, saw two female lions trying their luck on the Zebras, but missed twice.

Arrive in Savuti at 1230. The route was fine, due to recent rainfall. Sandy at some areas, but all in al fair enough. The delay is only from elephants mud bathing in the mud pools in the middle of the road, that you have to wait for them, causing delay. For me Camp 4 is the Best. It is right in the dry river channel.

My Game drivings started just 0530 to 1200, depending what you see. I would drive to the leopard rock, then straight across the Northern Marsh to Rhino Vlei, up to the Jackal Island. Then from there, cross the marsh to Gardenelia island, throught to Marabou Pan. Then the evening I would cross the steel bridge to Harvey's Pan. In total, saw 4 different Lion pride, 1 at Mababe Depression, 2 at Leopard Rock, 3 The Marsh pride at Gardenelia Island and 4th Pride at the harvey's Pan, towards the savuti airstrip.

The second night ,Was fortunate to spot the two male cheetahs at Jackal Island, its a coalition that are resident to the Marsh. Driving along the dry river channel is also not a bad idea, especially in the morning, from the Rock Paintings hill, all the way to Rhino Vlei area.

    Thanks Pat,

I prefer the safety of my office from the exposure with all those wild animals

Talking about, exposure, The elephants sounded my tent at night and you know, the ground tent, eish. How I wish I was in a rooftop tent, but its part of the experience. They come everynight to the campsite.
