    Default Bonnievale River Lodge review

Went to Bonnievale River Lodge at the begining of March 2019.

A beautiful campsite on the banks of the Breede River.

The weather was glorious with blue skies and hot 30 degree sunshine on all 3 days.

Ablution facilities are clean. Hot water available in the showers.Unfortunately I could not get the shower to adjust to a comfortable temperature and either had ice cold or boiling hot water. There are sensor lights from the camp area to the bathrooms.

Electricity is available at each camp spot.

The Breede River is clean and swimming is allowed in the river. There are canoes available to hire but these are limited and unfortunately were all booked out by the time we wanting to book one. There is also a swimming pool.

There is a jungle gym and trampoline to keep the children entertained.

Each camping spot is on lush lawn. The river fronted sites are definitely recommended. There are elevated sites with a deck but these are set a bit far back from the river (which IMHO is the biggest attraction).

Access via the N1 is easy and the surrounding towns of Bonnievale and Robertson are close by.

We went on the Breede River Cruise that departs from Viljoensdrift Wine Estate. This is definitely recommended.

The site was always quiet and we felt secure. The was a security man patrolling at night.

    Happy camping

I went there in November 2018. Riverstand i pre-booked and payed for was allocated to a large group instead, and I was friendly but firmly told to set up right next to the very noisy play park. It was a matter of take it or leave it... I was observed like an eagle to stick to the allowed 30 mins to off pack my vehicle and move my car to the allocated parking area asap! Ablutions was dirty most of the weekend and no hot water was available on the Sunday morning. Beautiful site indeed but it lacks proper management in my opinion.

We are usually a group of 4 or 3 couples camping with Bush Lapa's and prefer to go to off the grid places where we book the whole spot for peace and quiet. We were however invited to this campsite by friends and yes, it is beautiful and will tick most boxes for most people. I get the reason for strict rules. There are unfortunately some funny campers that goes to places with easy access by normal roads. Not that all 4x4 campers are angels either...

I just do not like being seen as just another possible problem camper and managed to that extent as per the example mentioned with the 30 min to off load your vehicle. Besides, I have lots of little "stuff" stored permanently in my 4x4 that I need and use while camping. I have a well-balanced setup between my 4x4 and Bush Lapa that works for me and makes camping easy. Having to walk to the car park every time I need something is not fun...

...but go check it out...I suspect with age I'm becoming very selective...or maybe I'm just turning into a grumpy old fart...

That is annoying if your vehicle is part of your camp setup.

We went to Rivierplaas late January this year. Needless to say, it was an amazing time.
huge grassed, shaded camp spots. a lot of space for the kids to play. River with Zipline, canoes and floats.
Facilities were good and clean. Just no electrickery though

Oh, and you can park your car(s) on the camp spot

Jip. Was there at the beginning of December last year. Hot as hell but lots of shade where we were on the river bank... close to the zip line. Chasing sun spots with my portable solar panel kept me busy.

"off pack my vehicle and move my car to the allocated parking area"

So its not for vehicles with roof top tents?

The view from the parking area is actually not that bad..... I'm sure they make exceptions for roof top setups...

I did not camp but stayed in the vineyard suite a while back.
Without going into detail, the whole experience was horrible and left a sour taste.

To their credit however, they did refund me in full.

No car at the campsite, 30 min pack-out time, no jokes? Guess I'll be giving this one a skip then
