Went to my local Spar en route home and found the below bag, nicely packed, estimate at 9kg and dry. R25.

    What wood is this?

If it burns nicely, leave a good coal bed to do a steak nicely, what does it matter if it is sukkelbos or not? Unless it is some of the prohibited woods, obviously.

I think "sekelbos" became popular years ago as this specie is a veld invader and takes over the veld when your veld was not managed properly. Farmers started bush clearing their farms and the wood became a cheap and sasily available wood. It also has all the right braai abilities for some good bushveld coals! All this at no expense to other non invasive species. And yes good mopanie, rooibos...... Are just as good if not better!

Sekelbos or better known as sukkelbos is rubbish In my humble opinion. Luckily I've got a friend working on a farm in Limpopo and I buy proper hardwood in large bags. For a family braai, 4 persons I'm only using 6 pieces of wood and long after we ate there's still red hot coles.

Also used to buy the sukkelbos crap even when dry it's not worth it.

Man you guys have it easy. Our local South African shop here had 25kg bags of Namib kameeldoring for Aus $35.00 and 10 kg Mopanie bags of charcoal for about 15 dollars.
At about 350 rands a bag then I still think its a bargain as I dont how the heck it came past customs....
I chop a small piece or take a single block of charcoal and add it to my gas braai . The smell and flavour is just unbeatable.

Very few woods beats the smell and smokyness on the meat of sekelbos for me. Humble opinion.

In the Province the braaiwood of choice is Rooikrans.
It is getting scarce and expensive in the City but in Gansbaai it can be had for 85c a piece delivered (providing you buy a 1000 pieces). Makes a good coal and 8 pieces is enough for a good fire and braai.

I must say, the last few times I have found good Sekelbos at Checkers. Yes, I also did not believe it at first, but I am now convinced this is a good buy. R25/R28 a bag, proper heavy and it work a charm. Best of all, never not been able to get it. Specific Checkers is the one at Forest Hill.

PS - not sure why 'Sekelbos' is spelled backwards...

Dirk very close to you on the Old Pta road, near Hennops Park, I think at the Total garage, they have a huge array of braai woods to choose from.

I buy this, no idea what type of wood it is, extremely heavy and very hard I've broken an axe trying to chop smaller burns for ever, only makes braai coals after about 2 bottles red wine or 2-3 hours. Delivered to me in old feed bags weighing about 60kg @ R50 per bag. I have to use Sekelbos to get it going then add these chunks, sit back and enjoy.

That Total is a lucky packet for quality. But the prices are not bad.
