Those are great prices. I paid I think R40 or R50 per bag for "Namibian hardwood" for the KP trip from a nursery close to where I live in Fourways. Which is why I bought wood at Harties for R10 per bag, and then got crucified for doing that!

I know it's not always straight forward, but try to determine where the wood you are buying is from.

The Harties wood, specifically, is an issue.

That's another reason I prefer Mopani. It's most certainly not endangered.

Two reasons you should NEVER buy from these guys....

They are stripping the surrounding areas
The wood is normally whatever they can chop down and is wet

I was lambasted for doing just that Apparently that wood is not responsibly sourced, nor is it properly dry...

I haven't used any of the 10 bags I bought, so I can't testify to the dryness....

I bought 70 bags of Kameeldoring from the same guy @R14/bag. I think they may not be dry enough as it does not perform the same as sekelbos, I have to stir them around to maintain the heat. As far as I know kameeldoring should be excellent for braai.

    Hi Walkabout,

Did you get some decent braai wood? What did you get, how much did you pay and are you happy?

Hi Groenman, apologies for the belated feedback. Despite all my plans, good intentions and excellent information received from you and others, unfortunately my time was not my own. I was quite keen to try the place DCTheron suggested for a 1st stop, but arrived in Johannesburg just after 11am so couldn't just drop my bags and run to fetch wood...DC said that place closes at 1pm.

So I thought not all is lost, I'll try your spot the Sunday - I had to take a heritage dressing cupboard to my sister in Rietondale on Sunday, but as we reassembled it I saw the one wooden "pillar" had a crack in, so then it was "call a friend and find clamps", glued it etc and by the time we finished that, we had 10 minutes to get back for a lunch braai in Joburg. So so much for all my wood plans.

But all is not lost - I bought 20 bags of supposedly Karee and 10 bags of hardwood from a lady in Melville (who lost her job as tour operator during Covid and now sells wood) for R24 each, so at least I got some stock for now and next time I drive up I will plan the whole exercise a bit better.

By the way there is a guy just outside the BP garage North of the corner of Soutpansberg & Gordon in Rietondale that had a large variety of wood, although he was not cheap the price is ok if you just want to buy a bag for a braai etc. He had about 6 or 7 different types of wood, sekelbos and 2 types of mopani and various hardwoods. I bought a sekelbos from him, just for the braai on Sunday and a bag of hardwood, which I compared in weight with the Melville wood and I must say it feels much heavier, so who knows the quality of the "hardwood" I got.

But thank you all again for all the information, I will save it for next time!
