    Santana box.
Very good full synchro box but you donít get spares for them.
Thats a Series 3S (called an R6 here) the diesel model is pretty scarce (has low ratio diffs)

    Thanks GaryFrank
I thought as much, but wan't sure.
Would I be able to put one of the 5-speed boxes into this monster? If so, which one would be able to handle the torque?
I would really like a bit more speed (or at least lower revs at 100Km/H).

The LT77 is a good option (early Rangy)
The LT85 has got very short gears (1st & 2nd) itís also a Santana box
The R380 is strongest but pricy

Problem is that they are all way too long and your gearshift is gonna be hard up against the seat box

    Hi GaryFrank

I would like to keep her as original as possible, but if I can't get spares for this box, then I
need to start thinking about other options.

Just for interest sake, would a Fairy overdrive fit on this box? Would it be worth it if I can find one?

There was a Toro overdrive for the Santana box, dunno if itís the same as the Fairy....(R8k second hand )
You should have the lower ratio diffs if sheís original - 3,54 instead of 4,7...
Those boxes pop up on gumtree every now and then....R5k

There should be a serial number of sorts on the selector cover above the front prop drive housing. This will tell you everything about the box.

The only real difference between boxes is the bell housing being +/- 10mm smaller on the 2.6 6 pot.
Obviously not comparing S2 (synchro on 3/4 only, clutch slave vertical on the drivers side) and the S3 with synchoís on 1/2 and 3/4, clutch slave horizontal on the passengers side

1st gear jumping out is normally the brass bushing that 1st & 2nd share. The bushing is pinned onto the main shaft and seizes into the gear if your oil level is low. (Bush breaks in half)
The replacement bush is a 2 piece affair. Not too expensive..... but you have to completely strip the box to replace it.

Thank you for the clarity on both box and ID. What shop would you recommend for finding spares on the old lady? Eastern Cape has slim pickings
