Question Which pickup camper to use - Pse share your views

This thread is not intended to start a debate but just to help me decide what to buy with the help of experienced overlanders, please.

    Backround:
I bought a new single cab Nissan NP300 diesel 4x4 to use for farm work and travel through neighbouring countries, maybe all the way through Africa eventually.
For now a month or 2 at a time but might start longer trips if we enjoy it.
Only accessories at the moment is a snorkel and bullbar.
Myself and swambo are 55 years old and me being a bit overweight on top of that, decided NOT to go for a rooftop tent.
I want to invest in a camper and so far looked on the internet at our very own Blinkgat on this forum as well as ABBA, Alu-Cab, Northstar, Aha.
As you know the above will range from 100-500K
I have been camping for 25years in tents etc etc so I know not to look for gadgets but need practical affordable and good quality in a camper product.
It is impossible to go and test all thats available so please share you view on any camper that you can recommend.

Having owned a Blinkgat I would certainly put them at the TOP of the list.

Best part is, you can rent their units and TEST it. You can then sit down with Sarel and sketch what YOU want from a camper.

My only "advise" - whichever brand you go for, do consider a "slide-on" type unit. Life happens and you may want another vehicle, then the unit can be re-used ....

It certainly is, bought a canopy from Sarel before and was quite happy. I figured out the slide-on option. Was going to build the camper on a defender chasis but realised that i will loose the camper if the defender decided to retire

Also look at the Bush Lapa Bosluis 2. We are extremely happy with ours. Not sure if they can put one on the Nissan bakkie- so far only seen them on the Cruiser and Hilux.

Looks like a very good option but it seems like it replaces your loadbin completely which i dont want to do.

    TX.
All these campers are probably good, and all of them are different.
We are all individuals, so each has their own specific requirements.
My advice would be to go and see them all, at one of these shows,
where they are displayed, to view by the public in general.
Before the show, sit down and write down, what your specific specifications are,
that you are wanting in a camper, so that you can compare this to the units you see.
Remember, the more you want, the heavier the camper will be; and the higher the price will be.
Here you would be able to view each one, set up close to the opposition, and compare them to each other.
You can get back to them, to check similarities, or, to compare build quality.
Take notes, as to what each one has, to compare with each other,
which will save time on walking back & forth, to see what the comparisons are, with each other.
This is an expensive item and getting it wrong, can cost you dearly.
Remember, anything better than what you have, is not necessarily, the best out there.
When you have compared them all to each other, you can approach the builder you have chosen,
to see if he can build you a Camper according to YOUR specifications and get a ball park figure for the build.
Get a second opinion from another manufacturer, who's build quality would also satisfy you.
If you PM me your email address, I will send you some reading material, that may/may not influence your decision.
If you send me your address, I will tell you when I am close to your area, then you are welcome to view my set-up.
I have had the same camper for nine years and would still not swop it, for a newer model, with more luxury.
My Camper was built to my specifications and I toured RSA to find a suitable builder and to see if I needed to change any of my ideas.
More luxury adds to weigh, so adjust your camping style to what you need, instead of what is nice to have.
Also remember that the more weight you carry, the more you are likely to have suspension and bearing/tyre failure.
Your set up should also be quick and easy to set up and pack away, so simplicity is the name of the game.
When making a choice, look at build quality and value for money. Do not allow poor workmanship influence price.
This is a long term project; and so the vehicle must live up to the build quality, and last as long as the camper.
My Camper is a dedicated camper, so not used for anything else. Removing it periodically can compromise water & dust ingress.
You do not need problems, when a long way from home; and the Camper will not fit any other vehicle, better than the one it was built for.
Do not rush into this decision and get what you really want, or need. You will never look back, as I believe that this is the right way to go.
If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me...

My very reason for buying the 79 Cruiser.

I am interested in the Abba and have received lots of information from them. What I like is the marine flush toilet and its shower.
How does the other products compare with this features. Would like to see pics of the other makes with shower attached.
It is not what you buy its what you build.
