Default Didnít realize my D2 cost so much to run..,

Did an exercise today... added up all my repair and service bills since purchase in 2004. Including kitting out vehicle, she has cost me in the region of 212k over 15 years. About 14k a year without fuel, licensing and insurance. Add purchase price of 250k and you at half a bar. I squirmed at first and started to say no more, then I remembered all the places she has taken me, as well as the memories...

And sheís back to the workshop on Monday for another issue...

Where and when do I draw the line?

The reason for the post is that I just had a full gearbox rebuild done including clutch kit and dual mass flywheel. 40k later... the Disco is only worth between 50 and 70k. I feel that I am over investing in her... but its hard for me to scrap her and walk away. Also, what do I replace her with?

Built in obsolescence makes vehicles cheaper to build, but not to own long term.

But subtract the stuff you bought because it looks cool/awesome.

You draw the line when you no longer want to do trips and have memories.

If you do an average of say 20k km per year, which is pretty low, then even if you add the purchase price of R250k, then it's actually not that bad.

That only works out at around R1.55 per km. Add in another say R1.20/km for fuel, assuming it's a diesel. You are still well below the AA or SARS or DoT suggested rate p/km

Very few people actually ever truly work out their true cost of ownership in R/km, and only consider the fuel cost when planning trips.

I think anything under R4.50 as a total cost per km for any full size SUV is decent

Okay, that is extreme. I have always have and loved landies, and have always kept my finger on the pulse of running costs. None have ever cost me nearly that much to run.

I had one defender that was just an endless money pit, and it had to go, as it was my work vehicle, and basically draining the company dry.

You will need to work out if all the major expenses are done now, or if there are still more to come? But I suspect you may have a lemon

But wait, even as a weekend toy. How on earth do you only do 40k km in 12 years, that's less than 4000km a year, or 400km a month. I have done 4000km over a weekend on the odd occasion.

That's crazy.... I think you might be better off renting a fully kitted vehicle on the odd occasion you need one

Camping once or twice a year. Bought a GS and started to do bike trips.

OP doesn't mention if those are actual money values or corrected for inflation. What is actually repairs and what is kitting up?

Kitting up was about 50k. Those are original invoices added up. No inflation taken into account. Good point.

The parts you need are relatively inexpensive. The ABS shuttle valve error part to fix is usd 55 (shop around) for a new one or you can do the mod for about the same price at a auto elec.

    Hi NewLandy

Tx but not convinced shuttle valve. Replaced that years ago. In my experience when that goes the three amigos stay on permanently? My lights all reset. They include the handbrake light.

OK, was not sure if the handbrake was by your doing or not..you need to get a Nanocom and see what the errors are..
