I have only been to the Vaal once this season with all the sewage and now inconsistent flows and weather. Pissing me off.

Still too hot for dullies - Its been pretty bleak.

Going to try head of to Sterkies as soon as the weekend weather looks better.

Trout at Whiskey Creek (company trout farm, Mpumalanga). The one that didn't get away.

Trout is delicious, I really don't understand catching and releasing them. Any decent sized trout on my line will end up on my plate.

It depends where the fish is caught to be honest - if its a stockie dam then yeah the fish are bred for catching and eating. If you are trying to stock wildish trophy trout in the EC, you throw them back unless its a gill hook - If its a delicate small river, with low populations, you dont even take that fish out of the water and release it as quick as possible as not to cause harm so your kids can one day fish the same stream. All depends on the water and circumstances.

Fair enough, I have never had the opportunity to fish streams like that. Only stocked dams in Dullstroom. I don't quite get why people release back into those dams.

    Thumbs up Re: Fly Fishing

If you follow certain individuals in the fisheries department, TROUT MUST be eradicated, it is according to them" Ruining our local fishing?"
These days I rarely fish, but when I do, I always fish stockable resources. What I catch, I/we eat! Nothing nicer that freshly smoked trout!

I fish in Dullies a lot, and honestly, I dont really like the taste of trout, and I couldnt keep all the fish I catch. So, rather let them go to grow up and hopefully give some guys a 10lber fight one day. I suppose I just dont see the point of not returning them for not returning them sake. Might as well let them live if I am not going to eat it. But Ja, dullies, no problem at all keeping what you catch since thats what the farms stock for.

I fully agree, one doesn't kill the fish if you aren't going to eat it. The part that I don't understand if why you don't enjoy the taste of trout.

Man I love the pic, a fly reel and rod stirs my emotions!

Many years ago Stealth had an add in one of the magazines with three ( I think?) reels rigged and ready to fish, standing in the rod holders on a boat. I used to stare at those golden and sliver beauties.

Edit: They were the Bluewater Range.

I caught a couple of yellows for the first time last year at Muldersdrift. Not on fly but with a small bass rod and floaties. Man, they fight like the devil on light tackle.

If you ever get to the North Eastern Cape for fishing - have a look at Barkly East Angling Society on Facebook.

I recently read the Nedbank Guide to flyfishing. There are so many destinations that I will probably never get to explore Is being a professional flyfisherman a viable career?

The terrain made flyfishing fairly impossible. It was at Glenburn Lodge - the river is quite overgrown and I am not that comfortable with rolling casts. I did get one small bass on fly but the floaties really produced much better. Hardly 10 minutes went past in the evenings without getting a bite.

PS. Glenburn Lodge is a really enjoyable place to go to.
