Great trip report - a lot of work went into it, but it's clear you had a blast recalling your adventure

Thank you for putting it together.

I believe the trailers have really destroyed parts of the Bitterfontein road.
1 to 1.2, depending on load. I have been down to 0.8 when playing.

Agreed, the road is a real bone crusher, spun to pieces.

I also think that the time of day played a role, I think he went out after 13:00 so that sand must have really hot and loose.

Post Re: Trip report Kgalagadi 2019

Excellent report comes at right time
I have never been to the Kgalagadi and from 16 February have 4 nights Twee Rivieren, 4 nights Mata Mata and 4 nights Nossob premium camp sites
Have done lots of research via Maps, Google Earth, Tracks for Africa both paper Atlas and Android version
From outside Pietermaritzburg shortest route is Kroonstad, Kuruman, Van Zylsrus, Askham
Wanted to see/ stay old Gemsbok hotel now Vanzylrus Hotel so have booked one night before and after Kgalagadi. Their advice was depending on current state of R31 to Askham perhaps do this route on way in as scenic( I am in no hurry, happy to do 50 to 60 kph) and return via Botswana B211 which goes Molopo gorge
I had looked at Google earth and your report seems to confirm that if
I went in or out at Middelsput via B211 at Bokspits I could go north on dirt to Twee Rivieren without having to re enter RSA ?

How does the border crossing then work ? In to Botswana Middelputs and can I then enter RSA at Twee Rivieren or not enter, do my 12 days and then decide to enter RSA (where) and go Askham to Vanzylsrus OR stay in Botswana B211 back to Middelputs then Vanzylsrus ?

    Thanks

Twee Rivieren is a border post the same as any other. Regardless of where you enter Bots you will need to cross back into SA at some stage.

You entered KTP via Botswana, if you leave KTP via Botswana (ie the way you came in), you dont have to go through customs at TR. You can travel up and down KTP. If you leave KTP to SA (ie at TR) you have to clear customs at TR. Or you leave KTP via Mata Mata to Nam, you clear customs at Mata Mata customs.

Thanks Stranger, awesome report. Love your humour.
We were booked for eight days in July but unfortunately I will be going for back op number three. My neighbour has taken over our booking. It is a first time for him so I will send him a copy of your report. He will be in a Jimny so I trust he will be aware of soft sand on inclines!
    Keep safe, travel often.

    Good one again Stranger.
This has made me maybe rethink visiting the TKNP sooner than later after our disappointing trip last year September.

Congrats on a entertaining and well written article. Could you please post your route both there and back as we always go the Kuruman, Upington route and would like to try something different.
