Nice Bus Cats! I'm enjoying my T4 Syncro don't regret baying it. I also have a 1998 Pajero 3500 V6 but hardly use it.. I only use my Syncro for holidays don't even bother to take the Pajero and I'm towing a caravan with it. Ones you use to this live style you won't change back to anything else...Glad I'm not the only one on the forum that's enjoying his Bus

I "upgraded" the halogen globes to Hella "Xenon look" type which promise whiter light and longer reach at the same wattage. What do you think? Does it look different/better? In the photo I changed the one globe only.

I have also gone that route in most of my vehicles.

The vehicle does look better with the white light and lighting has improved.

    A cost effective solution.

LEDs will be first price, but costly!

I did replace the park lights with LEDs. It must be the canbus type. The non-canbus type continuesly flashed in the Subaru and Hilux.

They however work fine as cabin lights in these vehicles.

They are great and work as promised but just check the run time vs standard globes, the trade off is a much shorter life and potentially less robust over dirt roads.

I have also had shortened lifespan from previous experiences on Osram Nightbreakers, but they specifically warn you about that on the box, shorter lifespan. They burn at a higher temperature due to changes in the filament, often taking a bit more wattage, which gives of more light, but as you say at the cost of lifespan.

I specifically chose these specific Hella globes as they do not indicate anywhere that there is a lesser lifespan on the box and wattage is the same as the standard globes. Time will tell on the lifespan, but they do seem to be giving off a bit more light. Might also just be due to the old globes being a bit older.

So I had to use my build in compressor and handy tyre repair kit over the weekend. Wheel ceased to be round on one side. Looks like a large nail got stuck on the tread part and eventually left the tyre, leaving an escape route for the air required to keep all the sides round.

I am glad to report that I can add puncture repair specialist to my resume.

So with this lockdown I finally finished a project that I had started a while back.

I had some leftover plywood and carpet and with two hinges and old bicycle chain made a drop down table for my packing system. Finaly sanded it down and sealed the wood a bit.

Well chuffed. So much so that I almost used up my last lockdown beer. But rather kept it for a warmer day.

Neat! A good packing system makes life so much easier.

I have the same spring loaded bolt lock on one of my slides. I drilled a small hole on the opposite side of the slide and tied paracord through the hole. The other side of the paracord I tied to the bolt lock. So now itís easier to pull on the string to unlock the slide.

For anyone following this thread and contemplated the LED bulb replacement upgrade on the DRL, Interior as well as number plate which I have done from globes purchased from 4x4 Direct. I can report that the interior lights are still working perfectly!

The numberplate and DRL ones however did not last and either stopped working or started flickering. They still looked pretty "sick" when they did work, so I might buy new ones again, they are not that horribly expensive IIRC, even if they don't last forever.

    I bought used 235 x 65 x R 17 tyres for my Transporter from a fellow forumite with a Touareg.

He also had the alloys available, but they did not fit on the Transporter

The Touareg does not share wheel bolt PCDs with the T5, T5.1 Transporter or Amarok

So as promised a few posts back, some feedback on the bicycle rack that I have mounted on the back of my bus. Here was my wishlist.

I was looking for a rack that would
    a) still enable me to be able to open the rear doors, even with bikes on the rack and
    b) be able to be left on the car and still enabling it to go inside my normal length garage.
    c) take as many bikes as possible, preferably 5

In the end it was a bit of a compromise but I am still sattisfied with the result.

Even though my current Thule hang on rack could take 5 bikes it was a squeze and although it could tilt it was still not enough to enable me to open the doors, not even when empty. Also due to the design I had to take it off the towball every day that I got home to fit the bus in the garage. Dropping my kids off at school in the mornings( this was pre C19 days) with their bikes made this a daily struggle.

From online searches it was clear that I would need to go for a door mounted system. The only reputable brand that I could find that make racks not only for the VW bus, but also for my barn door configuration was Fiamma. I contacted the local importers and they brought in the set that I found on the international website.

Unfortunately the barn door version can only take 2 bikes, but at least it enabled opening of doors as well as a fold function that enabled me to keep it on and still fit in a garage, without bikes obviously.

It is made out of aluminium and fitment was easy and quick.

Even though pricey it was worth the money in the end.

    Here are some detailed pics.

The rack also allowed me to still use my old hang on carrier on the towbar to carry 4 bikes on there and two on the Fiamma rack when needed. This gave rise to the double storey bike rack photo posted earlier. I still need to add some extra lights when using that though as it obscure the rear light a lot when carrying all those bikes.

Following on from Jason adding to his bush bus https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum...Project-advice

I thought it is also time that I give some more detail on the ladder that I fitted on my bus some time back.

It was a throw away ladder that a 4x4 place took of an old Landrover or something when they fitted a new roofrack and ladder and I could get it for free!!

So coming from a Land Rover Defender, I think, it was pretty much a straight ladder with just a bend at the top to meet the body. Aside from some surface rust it was still in good nick and about the right length for my need.

As I got it for free as was willing to give it a try to fit it, but was also worried that it might not work, so I was not keen on drilling holes in the door. I unsuccessfully tried to convince an engineering shop to try and bend the arms a little bit to more follow the contours of the door so in the end used it pretty much as is.

So what I did was fit thick rubber under the curved part. The idea was that the ladder would basically rest on the door with this piece and when used the weight would mostly be concentrated on this part pressing down on the bus door top part, which I guessed was strong enough for the job.

The ladder was basically pulled onto the door by two cables running inside the ladder arms and attached to the door of the bus by clips which hooked over the door of the bus. I used turnbuckles at the bottom of the ladder to pulled it nice and tight on the door and fitted some round doorstops at two points to keep the ladder part away from the body.

Underneath all the parts where it touched the body I added 3M protection tape to protect the paintwork.

The beauty of the job is that it is fully removable with no holes drilled

So far it has survived some rough gravel trips and my sons climbing up and down the thing the whole time. It is pretty solid and I a satisfied with the results.

Negatives are that the steps are round metal which hurt your feet when "kaalvoet", so I might one day modify the steps with some aluminium angle iron and tread plate, but so far for the effort made it works pretty well.

Plus is that it basically cost me some cable, 3m tape (which I had leftover from a MTB project) and some clips and 2 turnbuckles. WIN

Here are some close up pics if anyone wants to attempt something similar.

    CATS

PS - I am sorry about the photos on its sides. My LG phone and the forum don't seem to talk the same language
