If you buy it make sure you have about R200k savings extra... Just read a bit about the TDV6 getting all cranky....

Buy it and enjoy. There are far more that donít give trouble than those that do. Replace the oil pump asap as a precaution. Service cost around 3500 from an indi. Oil change every 10k kms is a must. Hse is great if you can get it. Active headlights are awesome. Some have softer leather. Much improved sound. Try find out if it has the new amk suspension compressor. Get a gearbox flush done asap

Buy but going in knowing a potential ownership expense is a R180k engine repair, if that doesn't sound distressing then it's an amazing vehicle, enjoy.

A totally valid point is even after a R180k engine repair you have a brilliant vehicle for not a whole lot of money compared to what a similar late model vehicle would cost.

Also keep in mind running costs are high, I've seen people mention budget for R10-20k per year maintenance before fuel costs.

Ask the dealer to change the crank before you take delivery...
Always think: Could this be sarcasm?

Don't forget to request they change spark plugs too.

No doubt an awesome vehicle (having owned one from 2011) - close to a perfect combination of an all-in one vehicle - from the bush to trails to highway to beach (with the right tyres!). Read the Sticky on this forum on the "preventative maintenance of the Tdv6". Its super comprehensive and I use it as a guide. I would suggest that you service it on the original schedule (every 6 months or IIRC (12?) 13 000kms). If possible have it reviewed by an indie or from a LR dealer, (the LR dealers do a 165 point check to decide whether to extend the warranty with covers the big risky items so that check should give you some comfort) - it will be worth every cent spent. Be aware of the risks (which applies to any recent model 4x4 SUV electronic laden car!) and then decide. The forum has many posts of "what did go wrong" so these are useful to evaluate risks. if you can get the extended warranty then it gives the extra peace of mind. Running costs per annum - probably around 20K in addition to the usual's such as fuel tyres .... but I will reiterate my opening line. Good luck

Apart from the well documented crank issues, see if you can get service history from LR based on VIN.
Check out the work done on air compressor if any. If 2009/2010 you may (probably) still have the Hitachi compressor which if it hasn't been changed to AMK or replaced with new Hitachi, may be on it's way out. 20k replacement cost for AMK (don't skimp on this. trust me).
200 000km - has it had a double flush on the gearbox, if not, factor this in urgently. In fact, if it hasn't been done yet, rather walk away.
Service history!!!! Can't stress this enough. Make sure you know exactly where this car has been.

    2) service costs
Depending on the service, minor about 2.5k and major about 4.5k or so with indies.

    3) whatís the main differences between S, SE and HSE
Seats, trim, lights, etc. HSE is always going to be the better option.

    Thanks everyone.
My opinion, and i'm biased, if you want a D4, get a V8. Makes sure you check out my thread for possible failures and pitfalls, get them fixed, enjoy. yes, the consumption is higher than diesel, but you live with it.

Is there not a way to check on the VIN if the crank has been done?

My brother has one. It's a great drive. But I'm always concerned about the crank going. That'll cripple our business. Repairing a Nissan, of which you can buy engine parts is not quite the same as a Land Rover where you HAVE TO buy the complete sub assy. Plus a Nissan you can buy an import motor.

Holy crap, an honest question followed by mostly rubbish responses. Well done negative respondents - you are directly helping the forum to go south.

Regarding the question itself, expect general service costs to be around R4k. Mine just had it's 120k service, including front and rear brake pads, which was R8200k. Be sure to track the vehicles' history at LR and with however it was serviced beyond. It should have had frequent services (at MAX every 20k), had the cambelt changed, gearbox oil changed and probably some other wear & tear items also. Best to buy from a dealer so that you at least have a warranty period to check out everything. I'd actually take it to a reputable indie to do a thorough check-up. R1k odd worth spending.

Spec levels - SE is probably the most popular with all the stuff you might need - satnav, reverse camera etc. HSE has mood lights, cameras all round (was an optional extra) etc.
Disclaimer - All my posts on this forum is without prejudice, is based on my fair assumptions or perceptions, is in no way intended to cause harm to anyone and is acted upon at your own discretion.
