    Default Botswana - Kuba Island

Hi. My wife and I plus another two couples, and maybe a forth, all senior citizens, are planning a two to three week trip to Botswana later this year - probably around August. We are all campers with a fair amount of experience between us. The one couple camp with a roof top tent, the other a ground tent and my wife and I, a trailer top tent. One of the destinations that we would like to visit is Kuba Island. If we do, it would seem that we should, if possible, be there to experience the sun set and sun rise.

My my reason for this post is that Im keen to get some input and help on our camp planning. What Ive found so far on the net sounds pretty aweful - nothing but a dirty pit toilet. None of us are equipped to be completely self contained, preferring to camp where there are reasonable ablution blocks and electricity if possible. I know that we will not find that at Kuba Island and whilst I have a chemical toilet that I could schlep all the way around for three weeks to probably only use for the night we are there, and whilst we could set up a bucket shower for the night, I dont think that this would be ok for everyone in our party. It would be great if a more suitable arrangement could be found. Wed also like to check out the nearby pelican breeding site if possible.

Constructive comments would be most appreciated.

We did Kubu a few years back...it is basic but we learned to bath in 3 litres of water and to do the spade thing when No 2 was required. With the right mindset it adds to the experience.

Thanks for comments. I think that our mindset is ok but with one of our party being over 80 I was hoping to find a little easier way of doing it

I hear your predicament and totally understand. Close to Kubu I know of no other option for overnighting.
My suggestion is to not visit Kubu but rather go to Nata Lodge. From there you can visit the pans for a day trip.
    Just my 2 cents.

    Hi Don P,

You could also try Makgadikgadi Adventure Camp which is around 20 kms from Kubu; although basic, it does meet your requirements at a reasonable price.

For me personally, I cannot understand the hype of Kubu.

I'm a person who is not phased in the least by roughing it, but man, Kubu got to me. I think its the combination of such an odd landscape, and not even a nice tree to sit under for some shade. I hated it. And so, because I was in such a bad mindset, the lack of just a tap for me to splash my face had me even more peed off. And on the topic of peeing - you need to go rock climbing just to find a little nook to be out of sight.

That being said, my wife loved it and was fascinated by the place, particularly the sunrise - I stayed in bed, I just wanted to get out of there.

Thanks to both Graham and Hans for taking the trouble to respond. Interesting views albeit somewhat divergent opinions. Ive taken a look at the Makgadikgadi Adventure Camp link and will be bouncing that off the rest of our party as an option. Thanks Hans

Don, my wife wrote a blog on our trip, the kubu portion is in the following link, scroll to Day 11:

As you'll see, she loved it, and I think gives a nice description of the feel there.

Don, i made us a toilet chair, old directors chair with new materiaal seat. It works fantastic. The place it tooks is just a chair space. Then if the granny is old to walk a distance take a pop up tent and put it up, dig a hole and use the chair. For one night it is very good.

To shower, 5 liter bucket work very good.

    Kubu is special.

Found these on another site that might be of interest.

    Tire toilet seat
    Hitch toilet seat
    Snatch strap toilet seat

Think I may just adopt one of these myself.

Hi Graham. Thanks a ton for your input. I have read your wifes blog from beginning to end and really enjoyed it. Please congratulate her on her photography and writing skills. The section on Kuba is noted. Regards, Don

Hi Witklipbank and Roberto. Thanks for your novel ideas on toilet seats. A couple of years back I used an old camping stool frame onto which I attached a standard toilet seat for a trip week did into Lesotho. It folded up like the original stool did and worked like a charm.
    Regards, Don
