Yes, the pump will burn out and seize.

I have often found that the power steering system starts to leak where the rubber and metal hoses join and all it often needs is simply tightening the clamps so I would closely inspect all the hoses to se where it is leaking from.

Your question depends on how much it is leaking and from where. It is not going to fail immediately if it is not leaking too quickly. You should be able too reach a place where you can get ATF if the system is not losing ATF quickly. I have see powersteering systems with so little oil in that they screech when turning the steering suffer no ill effects after a refill.

    I hope you come right.

    Been there and done that.

IF you can find and fix the leak and until then keep topping up the oil faster than it leaks then you will be OK but get the leak sorted ASAP!!
Or be ready to replace the unit.

Happened to me in Kruger - no choice except to get out, top up, and carry on to camp where I could get help.(Lowbed to Mbombela for repair)

Anyway we managed to save the unit.

ALL Costs (Including lowbed and rental vehicle) paid by the company that had refurbished the steering system days before and had fitted some or other valve the wrong way round !!!!

Can't you disconnect the hydraulic pump for the mean time, just to protect it if the oil level drops to low, often it's just a belt that drives them?

BTW, be careful to clean spilled ATF from your engine bay. When it comes into contact with certain types of rubber hoses, it will weaken them.

I'd drain the dot 4 asap and hope the rubber seals in the pump/system is compatible with dot 4 oils and not damaged. Low viscosity engine oil would probably have been the safest to use.

I added DOT3 once in a blonde moment: too thin and it immediately leaked past the seals. Drained and replaced with ATF and the pump was fine afterwards.

So if you catch it quick, it's better than filling the system with water or urine...........

Never put brake fluid into a system designed for an oil (like ATF). Incompatible with the oil resistent rubber seals, and way too little lubricity.

Would engine oil work be a passable solution to get you to civilisation, most people have some spare in the vehicle for top ups?

Could work if oil temps are 30C or higher. ATF typically have approx. 200cSt viscosity at 0 degC, while typical 15W-40 engine oil reach that viscosity at around 30 degC. So if using engine oil and it is cold, first let engine run for a while before driving off to heat the engine oil in PS to acceptable flowability.

Reason being that PS pump might cavitate badly if run with coldish engine oil because of inlet pipe flow resistance

Power steering fluid + heat = fire....
It also destroys plastic, rubber and paint..

I will need to add dot4 nd atf to mine engine oil spare when taking trips to the mountains. The car seems fine for now. I drained the dot4 and filled with atf.

Drive past Wupperthal yesterday. Very sad. Seeing people looking lost and shocked at what happened.
    Wishing them well
