    Default TDi Motor

Hi all, I have been offered a Defender TDi at a really good price. The vehicle is in really good condition but has a blown motor. I have no idea what went wrong but it looks like a turbo failure with some bad results.
I recon a complete motor or conversion would be the best way forward. Has anybody perhaps () have a TDi motor in good condition they want to sell.

Remtec supply recon engines, may be worth considering them as the engine will come with a warranty

Stay away from Remtec, just had a really bad experience with them, and so much for their warranty.

Maybe asses the damage first, a rebuild might work out much cheaper and then at least you know what youíve got.

I would personally rather have my indie do a rebuild for me than buy a secondhand motor...even if itís more expensive.

I have no history on the vehicle. What I do know is the motor blew somewhere near Swellendam. A guy (motor mechanic) stripped the entire motor and quoted on repairs. The owner rejected the quote and told him to re assemble the engine which he did. I can just imagine how he put it back together. It looks reasonably complete but there is no way any reasonable effort would have been made to even half assemble correctly. I therefore recon a "new" engine would probably be the best option. He even claims there is crank damage ... how ??
I am going to weigh up my options early next year and see what I am going to do, maybe an engine overall is the way to go

I would also rather budget for a complete rebuild, 2hnd motor won't be cheap and you don't know its history either so you could find yourself very quickly back to square one and a fair bit out of pocket.

The problem with buying a secondhand motor is that it will probably be a high mileage motor due for a rebuild sometime in the near future anyway.

But it all depends if this motor is salvageable...whatever you do, donít go the conversion route (not even td5). Stick to a 300, the landy will be worth way more in future if you keep it standard.

The UK guys have several adapter options for using Isuzu and Nissan TD engines if that is something you'd want to consider.

The Isuzu 4JG2T 3.1L and the Nissan QD32T 3.2L are both good engines and just as strong as the 300 TDi.

I would suggest you find a trusted mechanic to strip and assess your engine. He doesn't need to be the one you will use for the repair, just needs to be trusted to give you an honest breakdown.
Crank damage, for example, can range from needing a light journal polish to it needs scrapping.

If you rebuild your engine and do it correctly, it will for all intents and purposes be "as new".

Jip, I reconed on around R40K for a good rebuild. The Defender (PU) will cost me R40K. That's a minimum of R80K maybe even R90K by the time it's on the road in my name. I am beginning to wonder if it's worth it

I'd buy a good 110 pickup without an engine for R40k in a heartbeat......

    I was offered R 90 k for mine recently.

    Paid R 75 k 5 years ago.

    At R 90 k you're not getting a bargain, but it's not a bad deal, considering you'll have a new motor.

i got a spare 300tdi engine with my 110 pickup i just bought recently.
want to first have it checked out by a mechanic to see in what condition it is, sound like it might be just a timing and/or diesel pump issue on it.
but that is just on hear say from previous owner, so i really got no idea...

what does second hand 300tdi engines sell for?
