    Depends on your budget!

Also, is recharging a requirement / option or not (e.g. for long hikes I prefer units that take standard cells.)

For kiddies, the Energizer headlamps are great value.
    I have always had excellent performance from Petzl headlamps - wide range from basic to advanced;
Led Lenser always worth a look.
For some serious high-powered units, look at Nitecore.

I have had mixed luck with expensive headlamps (including Petzl), so nowadays I buy the cheapies (energizer etc.).

Whatever you buy, make sure it has the red light function - the amount of bugs that will fly into your face multiply by 1000's if you switch on your bright white 100000 lumens headlamp, especially around our parts of the world.

    I use Petzl and Olight.

These are on special at Trappers at the moment. The Tikkina is an excellent all-round camping headlight.

Personally, I use the Olight H1R for EDC and camping. Brilliant torch/headlight!

Best bang for buck: petzl actik core

Red led function, comes with rechargeable battery or can use 3x AAA, switches on to its lowest brightness setting and then next brightest setting as you press the switch, will last you years.

I stil have an older model Petzil, but it was not bright enough and was fixed so could not be adjusted for angle an also did not had a red light.

I use Energizer for a few years now and are quite happy with them. It is all that I need in a camping headlight. I like KISS (Keep it simple stupid).

I use rechargeable AAA batteries in mine and it last quite long enough.

The problem with quality is not so much the torch itself, but the headband. The heaband normally perish (losing its elasticity) way before the there is anything wrong with the torch.

I also use the Energizer a lot during night time predator hunting operations. Not for shooting but for walking around in the veld and opening and closing of gates and such.

    And they lasts well enough.

The Petzl Actik is a fantastic headlamp, great quality. You can use batteries or a rechargeable in them. If you are looking for something less then the Tikka is also awesome.

I have a Tikka, at least 20 years old, still going strong. It still has the original headband, but it is now twice the length. I also bought a Actik recently, I wasn't overly impressed, considering the price. My dog, Jan, agreed and chewed the thing to pieces before I could use it on a trip.

I highly recommend the H7. Doesn't have red though if that's something you want.
