Default New Wrangler Poor Crash Test

Not the most promising results from the new Wrangler in the NCAP crash tests.

I wouldn't say 1 star for a new vehicle costing almost 1mil is too encouraging.

Bulldust tests because they want autonomous lane change this and avoidance that and beepers on the rear belts.

The new tests are ridiculous when it comes to electronic safety gadgets.

Must say it does not look that bad, 1 star is a bit harsh, cab stays in tact?

Look at the NP300 now that is scary, they had it on Carte Blance on Sunday

I'm on one of the Jeep Wrangler JK Facebook groups where the majority of members are from the States (obviously). On a daily basis people post pics of accidents, whether Wrangler vs Buck or Wrangler vs some other vehicle. In basically every accident the Wrangler driver got off unscathed - no matter the seriousness of the entire accident. In many instances the Wrangler does not even look damaged, however the other party's vehicle looks FUBAR.

So no, I do not always belive these NCAP tests. Real life examples have proved to me that the JK is quite robust and safe.

As per my post on the Panda that got a zero in NCAP, I'm having my doubts on the test criteria as well. The score is definitely not an indication of how well it stands up in a crash anymore.
As an aside, the head on crash on the Wrangler is interesting. The headlights don't even break!

I agree that the tests are a bit rubbish because they look for all these fancy bells and whistles you aren't concerned to have in a Jeep. I would still much rather be in a Jeep in an accident than some small car with the fancy stuff that gets 3+ stars.

My thoughts were more that if you're paying close to 1 mil (assumed), is having things like airbags for the rear seats unreasonable?

I suppose the short answer is buy a Grand Cherokee then. But I get your point.

More interesting is to see how badly the Panda, Punto and now Wrangler are doing on the tests which are all FCA vehicles. Can't be good for the reputation.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the testing criteria! Guys need to realize that the highest it can get is 3 stars so is 1 star that bad for this type of vehicle??
Regardless, 50% adult protection in a 2018 released vehicle is abysmal (the Panda got 45%)
It should at least have rear airbags which would possibly have resulted in 2 stars.

They need to differentiate between Crash tests and Safety tests.

I want to know how well the structure and design of the vehicle will hold up in a crash, the electronic assists are another category as far as I'm concerned.

I don't see many rear passenger airbags on new models.

    Fortuner? No
    Hilux? No
    FJ? No

rear air bags only appear in higher spec vehicles like the LCs and GCs and so on.

Side airbags, it's the reason they omitted the pole test.

If i look at the second (full width frontal impact) test with the white jeep there was almost no frontal deformation. So instead of the vehicle absorbing a lot of energy by slowing the deceleration it is all passed to the occupants. The first partial frontal impact seemed to fare much better, and as mentioned much better than nissan np300, but the second one is a shocker.

The guys surviving accidents are probably because they have used the other vehicle as their crumple zone.

To me this shows poor engineering in the current environment. I can't believe this country banned defenders on the basis of safety while they allow this vehicle to be sold, but i guess this is also the country that castigates VW for slight emissions, while "rolling coal" in your pickup is just fine. At least the standards they have are double standards!

    Safety
The FJ Cruiser’s comprehensive standard safety package includes front seat-mounted side airbags and first- and second-row side curtain airbags. Dual-stage front driver and passenger advanced airbags deploy based on impact type and severity.

The Fortuner has the curtain air bags that drops down a bit, but yeah, not full side protection I guess.

The JK does pretty well in the harsh small overlap test Iihs did. Many 5 star EuroNcap cars don't fare well in this test.
