Works the same as with security at your home - you must just be better protected against burglars than your neighbours.
A kettie works well when camping for a longer period. At Namushasha on the Kwando one uses the kettie to scare away the monkeys on day one and two - thereafter they give you a wide berth.
Monkeys enter a caravan tent from underneath through the skirtings. We used a large second-hand canvass to make a one piece ground cover and skirting for our Oryx caravan -ensure that the tent canvas is secured with tent pegs and door zips are secure with small D shackles and viola – your neighbour entertains the monkeys.
It also helps to lock all the food in the caravan

Baboons once trashed my locked bar fridge beyond repair at Pilanesberg.
There were only a few beers & cokes inside it.
They did not manage to open it. So out of frustration they can wreck any locked box, I'm sure.

Back in October, I was driving my Defender alone in Chobe National Park and stopped at the picnic area where the safari guides usually stop around 9am for coffee and biscuits. I had the passenger seat window down and the second I stopped a fairly large monkey jumped right on to the door opening. I yelled at it and it immediately lunged at me, showing teeth and screeching at me. I had just picked up a large water bottle for a drink and instantly whacked it right in the mouth. It took off and didn't return, but I could tell by the number of them that were almost directly underfoot that the tourists had probably been feeding them for a long time.
